Petrol - Do you really need Super unleaded?
Hi Folks,
Just an observation, but having driven a standard wrx for a couple of months now on optimax etc., filled up today with standard issue 95 ron unleaded (no 97 available).
I've driven the best part of 200 miles today - both m/way, A road & some twisty b-road action - & can not detect even the slightest deterioration in performance + I've saved £4 filling up.
Has anyone else had any experience of running their scoob on 95 over a longer period- is super really necessary?

my bro has a civic type r and insisted on always using optimax.
With the shortage of fuel he began using normal unleaded and noticed no difference in performance.
i suppose its different in each car. Ive recently put tesco 99 ron in my 03 sti ppp and the car runs well...

I think as long as you use at least super un-leaded your ok.
If you use normal unleaded you are asking for trouble. An engine builder friend who works for Cosworth did try explaining the reason why a while back, but I cant remember the details.
I should go back to 97ron at least If I was you fella.

A high octane fuel has a much better resistance to detonation than a low octane one. When your engine starts to det then excessive pressure builds in the combustion chamber, the ensuing shock waves can be enough to wreck your bearings etc..

I never had a problem on 95Ron (UK car, handbook reccomends 95Ron or higher on mine -NOTE: other scoobs are different depending on year, spec and county of origin - check your manual). And for day to day driving I cannot tell a blind bit of difference. Even mpg is the same.
Perhaps if I went on a rolling road I may see a few more peak horses at 6000+rpm. But seeing I rarely do 6000+rpm for any duration, there's just no point imo.

I would not recommend using the 95 ron stuff especially in a JDM which was set up for 100 ron. U will be at risk of detonation i.e pre ignition which WILL damage your engine over a period of time. My 03 STI PPP states 98 ron on fuel filler and it gets nothing but unless emergency when I will put no more than £5 of 97 ron in to get me home. If u have to use 95 ron would recommend Millers Octane Booster to stay safe.

As said in another post. The Subaru Specialists who look after my car (A standard WRX) clearly said that Premium unleaded in absolutely fine for my car and SUL is not necessary.
He said they use Premium unleaded in their own similar vehicles and as read elsewhere on here, somone posted that they have run WRX's to 90,000 miles on premium unleaded without problems.
