Default Car won't start, any suggestions?

My car is currently sitting in my garage and won't come out.

When I turn the key it is making a whining sound.

Yesterday The car was started up just to move it out of the garage then started up again to put it back in, which I guess could flood the engine, but I wouldn't have expected the whining sound, so could it be electrical?

Any suggestions would be grateful as I would like the breakdown people to be a last resort.

I don't have a battery tester and nothing was left on.

I guess there is no way of checking the immobiliser.

Is it worth trying to start it again?

If it was immobilised, nothing would happen when you try and start it.
If the battery is flat, there is usually some response, but not enough to turn the engine over. See if the lights work.
If there is a whining sound, I suspect the starter motor is turning, but the Bendix gear is not engaging with the flywheel. so the engine does not turn over.

always start with the basics! do you know anybody with a multimeter to check the battery? it may well be the starter, but if the battery aint upto scratch it aint going to turn over! have you got a charger? put it on charge for an hour and try again? whateva you do dont jumpstart it!! this can cause damage to ecu's etc!

If it's making a whining noise it could well be the starter motor has jammed. Give it a clunk with a hammer to free it up.

The breakdown people have now visited and the car is still sitting in my garage.

The guy thinks it is a faulty coil pack, so I am going to have to get the car delivered to a scooby garage tomorrow (hopefully my regular place can take me).

I have been told it is a quick job.

i have seen 3 vehicles damaged due to jumpstarting mate, if your not careful the sudden spike damages ecu's, not all the time, but i can happen! a mk4 astra was one, a renault espace, and a merc a class! all needed new ecu's!

The donor car is most at risk when jump starting.
If you remove the leads whilst the cars are running, the alternator on the donor car, which was charging up the flat battery on the other car suddenly has nowhere to put all its charge. This can give a big voltage spike to the donor cars electrics. It can even blow off airbags!

My nice mechanic from Northants Subaru came to my house last night to look at the poorly car.

He got it started in around 10 mins.

Looks like one of the cam / crank sensors has given up.

The 2 sensors are going to be tested and then a replacement for the faulty one will be ordered (I have some second hand ones in for now to get me mobile).
