Post Newbie - Just bought a new WRX SL (06)

Hi All,

As the subject suggests, I am new to the forum and have just ordered a new WRX SL (06) yesterday, dealer thinks it will be here before Xmas.

Any helpful tips on running/owning a Scooby will be appreciated.....

Warm it up, cool it down, feed it the best fuel and oil you can, then avoid driving flat out in top gear

Welcome to SNet and Scooby ownership Keep the revs below 4k for the 1st 1k miles, then build up slowly once she's on good oil. Most importantly, wave to your fellow Scoobs, and get yourself along to your local meets

Wise words from the man who (used to ) owns the worlds fastest Scooby. I bet you were flat out in top to get the record

Understand the warm up, have with all my cars and bikes, understand the cool down bit for the turbo etc. What do you mean avoid flat out in top gear apart from your licence and petrol....

Cornish For info as you're a newbiw : Andy F is one of the most prominent tuners and an authority on Scoobies.

Im a clueless tw*t by comparison, but I think Andy was referring to the fact that sustained top speed runs and a top mounted intercoolers do not make happy bedfellows! Basically, the aerodynamics of the scooby's bonnet mean that above about 120mph (if memory serves) air is forced over the bonnet scoop, rather than into it! This means the intercooler can't do its job properly, intake temps rise and damaging detonation can set in causing an engine failure.

I thought the MY06 had a bonnet redesign to account for this, not sure how successful its been though as I've not seen any data. Subaru have reduced the size of the scoop on the 06 relative to the previous years though, so I'm guessing they're confident. :-)

Oh, and watch your right foot, we've had a number of posts from people who've got a ticket not 5 mins after picking up their new scooby.

Also bare in mind with winter setting in that AWD isn't a get out of jail free card, so take care!

Above all: enjoy it!

Thanks Everyone!

Wasn't questioning you Andy, as I don't know anyone on here yet. Just curious about the top end remark, will try to find out about the new bonnet and scoop....Cheers NS04.

Will take it steady, I have traded my Type R so used to abit of performance....Oh and I don't want to open up a CTR or WRX issue, will just say I have loved driving my CTR for the last three years and I hope I will enjoy the WRX as much.

Just to clairfy, I didn't mean to imply you were questioning Andy's advice. There is so much advice on here that -as a newbie- it's difficult to know who to listen to! I was just prompting you to look out for posts by a real expert which Andy most certainly is

You'll find the scooby a very different experience to the Type R- I doubt you'll look back.

exactly. very simple really, same goes for any high power turbo car,if u dont warm up and cool down properly it wont last pissin time, then ul get the whole "scoobs are so unreliable" crap
if u go by the above(and dont fit silly mods), then it will take a good hammering!

Cheers Guys

Will take all the advice I can get and watch out for the crap!

Just to clarify, what is the warm up and cool down process. Just guessing no hard acceleration and high revs. until the car is warm and slow driving or leave it running for a minute at the end of the journey to let the turbo etc. cool down.

Can't you get over run devices to help with this!

Will get pictures of the new car posted when I pick it up. It's a Crystal Grey, WRX SL with a tracker and bluetooth phone kit, went for the SL for the leather seats and electric everything inc. sunroof.

flat4_ire, What do you mean I doubt I will enjoy it as much, now you've got me worried!!

and basically warm up is, dont drive her over 3k revs for ten mins or so,this is what go buy, and if ur thrashing it around dont just pull over and switch it off, give it 50secs to a minute to cool down

The dealer did not have much info on prodrive for the 06 yet. Said they are still working on the PPP for the car and the only official item is the new wing, which I didn't like and it cost over £800.00 by the time its painted....

Standard accessories, 17" gold wheels, solid mud guards, quick shift and different gear **** and surround. I think that was about it.
