If the previous ownber has treated it well then no problem. If its done 45k then it must be reliable. I know where you are coming from though with a mint car and low miles and had it from new .

I reckon its all Jase, Mike T, Akira and Pauls fault . I am embrassed to turn up to a midlands meet now .

Ive got an Sti 4 type R and they are absolutly awesome, 45k is nothing for a subaru engine if it`s been looked after..
Go for it, you dont get many chances like this to get a rare impreza....

I have a real dilema at the moment which is causing me loss of sleep.

I am currently on my second impreza (MY00 V plate with 15K on the clock) and I have just been offered a V Plate WRX STI Type RA Ltd.

This car is an RA with all the creature comforts of the STI Type R (Air...diff lock...short ratios etc.)...plus the ultra quite steering rack (2 turns lock to lock) from the 22b.

The car has numerous extras including:

CAT 1 alarm
Nice Stereo
Carbon Fibre interior
STI Rally Flaps
Morrette Twin head lamps
GGR Centre Pod with Gauges.

etc.

The problem is the car has 45K on the clock. This is all motorway miles and the car is currently owned (1st owner from new) by a sensible 50 year old man. It has just had its cam belt service and has a clean bill of health.

Further more...the gentleman previously had a Saab Aero...which did 242 thousand miles on 1 clutch !!!!...this says a great deal about the way in he treats his cars.

I really love the car to bits....but I am concerned about getting such a high mileage car.

My MY00 is in superb condition and has been treated with the upmost respect (honest ).

So guys (and gals)....what would you do ?

Go for it! 45k isn't all that much and if it's been treated extremely well for those 45k, it is far better to get it than go for a 15k one which has spent most of it's time at full revs on a track getting spun all over the place...

It is a pretty rare car and is well specced. As long as the price is right (and it also might be worth checking what petrol he's been using in it and any other mods), what more do you want?

As we discussed yesterday, if the car has been maintained as suggested then it may be a good deal if the financial aspects discussed are realised. As promised, I will have a chat with my contact in the next few days and see what that turns up.

In the mean time mate, may I suggest Ketamin, Valium and Beer as a temporary antidote. JOKE!! LOL

Have you done a search on the autotrader website to see whats out there.

As discussed yesterday, it does sound like the dogs danglies but will you be still happy with it in 12 mths time when its got 70k on it?
But then as MatthewR states, a car with a little bit more miles on it in good condition is a lot better than a low mileage car that been thrashed to death.

Hope you sort your dilema out mate, a bit of JD and coke usually helps me out.

Type RA's are very welcome at the Cambridge meet. Who knows, you might start a trend!!

I agree wholeheartedly re: high milage cars. My TVR's got 137,000 miles on the clock, and is still going strong. A regularly serviced car should do at least 100,000 miles. What's more, any "niggles" usually occur early in a car's life, so at the sort of mileage you're looking at, they should have all been sorted. Go for it!!

...and by the way, don't forget you "banked" your intention to by a Type R (new fireplace, flooring, etc.). Now it's time to open the account...!

The price is right....the miles...well...I'm still thinking if I can get rid of a perfect car with 16K on the clock for an extreme car with 45K on the clock.

just a thought. why would any body with no intentions of going fast have a 3 gauge centre console ? surely type RA don't come standard like this ?

I have a standard UK MY00 car but have just bought a MY98 type RA (ver 4) as my second car - the wife refused to give up the uk car. I just couldnt believe the difference not just compared to the standard uk car, but also to the sti 4. The gearing is not a problem - so you lose a few mpg, but dont drive any scooby if that bothers you - and top speed is a litte down, but who uses that regularly !
The lack of some sound deadening makes it slightly noisier but not enough to worry about. My car has climate but no electric mirrors, windows or central locking - central locking is the only real pain in a 4 door car ! Mine has a quicker rack too.
Overall it is the fastest car I have ever driven and think it's fantastic.
The mileage debate caught me up for days - comparing a year younger Type R (good colour/nice extras) but with 60k as against what I bought with only 7k. In the end I reckoned I would be doing a number of track days and that the lower mileage was important. If you dont want to go to the track (cant believe you wont though) go for the higher mileage one - otherwise maybe try and find a different car - RAs are rare though....Not really sure if my rambling has helped at all now...

this gentleman is the type of person where money is no object. His car was serviced by Graham Goode (not the cheapest place to get a car serviced).

He saw the carbon fibre interior, boost gauge pod etc. and decided it would be nice. He also purchased STI mud flaps to keep the dirt from the car as he did so many miles (nice touch).

i agree with trigger

if you are not doing any track days it will be perfect. however, 45k on a car that is running 97 ron instead of 101 ron is a bit iffy...... maybe. although RA's are rumoured to have the strongest pistons of all the scoobies. it all boils down to what you want. you want the car but looking for support because you probably don't think it is sensible to leave your car for it.

so go for it i am sure you will have fun either way.

you are correct....the miles are indeed a big concern. I do quite a few trackdays and wouldn't want it to blow up.

I will map for 97RON almost immediately using either LINK or MOTEC...I have already planned this into the equation. I will also use octane booster for trackdays (I do now even in my UK car).

I guess the only way to figure out the state of the engine is to take it to bits

You guys make me laugh going on about high mileage cars . 45K? That isn't high milage, to me it is <B>low</B> mileage LOL I would think a Scoob is not even properly run in at this mileage

I would say high mileage is anything over 100K and even then shouldn't be a problem if it has been properly serviced.

Looking for a little moral support are we mate! It can't be any easy decision but I think you know how much I'm enjoying my recent aquisition.

I did speak as promised to my mate regarding the Cool Grey TypeR and any others he may know of. The Cool Grey is not currently for sale, although he believes it won't be long before it comes up. Only thing is that the owner paid £27K <ouch> new for it and would want top dollar. He's keeping an eye out for any others that may be around but couldn't promise anything.

In light of this mate ............ GET ON WITH IT!!!!!!

I've already started printing your Midlands TypeR (RA) Owners Club Card.
