Default Standard engine rebuild costs?!

How much (ballpark figure) would a full standard rebuild on a classic UK Turbo engine cost?

Not after anything special, just say a complete refresh of a higher mileage engine with the usual wear and tear of say 120k miles. Back to basic spec, nothing more, but replaing worn bits ready for another 100k miles.

I know I'm assuming a lot, and things could range from one end of the scale to the other, but you guys must know the average cost of having a basic rebuild (or some of the guys who've blown engines in the past might?)

Am I looking at say £1k, £2k, £3k+ etc cheers

Recently had full engine re-build @ 108,000 miles by local, independent scooby specialist after big-end failure:

* New Subaru short block c. £1,250
* New clutch, bearing, etc. c. £250
* New oil pump c. £200
* New cambelts & tensioner c. £200
* Ancillaries, gaskets, fluids, misc., etc. c. £500
* Labour (inc. top end re-con) c £900

All + vat. It's not the big stuff that's the killer - it's all the little knackered bits & pieces that get found when the engine's out & stripped: I had about enough change out of £4,000 to buy a piece of rope to hang myself with... went down the pub instead!

Good luck!

I wouldn't go to anyone apart from API, just had some work done there, very professional set up, very high standard of work, nice bunch of guys and pretty good on price. They build loads of engines everyweek and there isn't anything they don't know subaru's.

Surely rebuilding an engine that hasnt failed will cost significantly less than making good a failed angine? Assuming that nothing is out-of-round then it shouldnt be too bad Id have thought?

If you can save the crank, then there's and immedlate saving in the order of £300 - £350.

It was £900 labour: to get the engine out, strip, inspect, re-con cylinder heads, re-build, re-install, etc. To be fair there were also a number of other little jobs that only became apparent when the engine was out, including replacing the power steering pipes, battery, heat shield, etc. The rest was for parts, air-con re-gassing, etc., which are all itemised and prices are all ok; the £4k figure also includes around £500 vat. The people I use have done other jobs for me, all at less than half Subaru prices (cam belts c. £170), so I'm happy that I'm not being ripped off. Perhaps you'd like to take a look at the bill and tell me how you'd have done it cheaper?

Buck, We never disconnect air con; that saves a few bob, it is done by removing the compressor from the block and laying it on the battery tray area still connected. There are other things too that save money that l'll happily pass on by pm etc. Obviously too late now, but yes l'll willingly take a look at the bill for you. On the face of it, we could have saved you money, but I would need to quoting like or like and to say it's expensive without being in possession of the information of what was actually done is perhaps mischievous.

Not intended.

Fair enough - thanks. The place I use is local (ish), so obviously it's a 'no-brainer' for most stuff; however, do you do suspension/geometry testing/set-up? I have family in the area and regularly visit (up this weekend, in fact) so would be ideal for little jobs, bits n' pieces, etc. Are you open on Saturdays?

When my 96' Classic Turbo's engine let go (35,000 ), i didn't get much change out of £4k. That was done through the local Subaru garage who sent it to Prodrive.

Just 3 weeks after i'd spent £4000 on a painted STi spoiler and 18's. 4 grand in the bank became 4 grand on the credit card

No they didn't! Prodrive don't do regular customer car work - if you ring them they just tell you to call a dealer who can buy parts off the Prodrive sports parts list, but Prodrive don't do any work like that at all. EVER, never did either.

That dealer's telling porkies.

On Wilma Dearing or on your car ??

Seriously, the work done here is usually completed in 7 - 10 days but we are generally booking for completion about 4 weeks away. Right now I'd be pressed to have it done much before Xmas. It can be done but it'll be right up to the holiday. What an Xmas pressie? fully rebuilt with a singing motor !!

Kind regards - Good Luck David
