In my opinion you cant better a Mitac Mio 168 PDA which has a built in GPS receiver and it costs about £210 delivered. Those on budget may consider a skanked copy of Tom Tom 5 from t'eBay for £5..... Better than a dedicated TomTom unit for half the price and its a 300MHz XScale PDA too.

I forgot to mention: it comes with a 12v power adapter and a German manufactured car cradle. I got a free USB cradle as well.
It works well if youre walking or usung your company cycle too.....

Can't argue with GC8, go with the PDA option with GPS receiver, I have a Dell Axim X5 with a wired receiver with TomTom Navigator 5 software, just over £200 and has all (more) functions than the £500+ TomTom units......

My vote goes to Tom Tom dedicated units for a ready to go and very easy to use unit. (Even if it does look like a toy ) The Tom Tom maps are a bit old now though. Destinator based units are much more up-to-date. Garmin seem to have several chunks of information missing from them and are pretty awkward in comparison to the TomToms
One thing I would look at is the maximum volume of these units. In a noisy Impreza many are a complete waste of time if you rely on the voice. Some obviously have external speaker outputs etc. The Navman is one of those that needs to be held against your ear to hear it.

This is all subjective of course; but in my opinion a dedicated TomTom is totally inferior to a PDA that has a built-in GPS receiver, running TomTom software. The PDA is far less bulky, it has a far superior screen and its a fraction of the price !
I forgot to add that as well as a free USB cradle, my Mio 168 included an external GPS aerial, as well as the case, 12v power cable and the excellent windscreen mount.
With regard to volume and screen brightness, I regularly turn them all way down, the volume especially.....

Like what? I'm on my third Garmin, GPSIII, GPSV and now Quest. I've never found any info missing at all? Is it the base maps that have missing info? If so then no problem as they come with CD maps with far higher detail. Used to mean changing maps every time you went to another part of the country but now they have so much memory you can load the whole country in at max res with some to spare.
> and are pretty awkward in comparison to the TomToms
I see the Tom Tom as a navigator for people who can't read maps, and aren't interested in maps, it gives you a picture of where to go. Garmin are a professional aircraft GPS company who have moved down to the car market and their kit reflects their heritage. If you like using maps then the Garmin just makes it easier to do so by automating the process. Makes the Tom Tom look like a toy as said above.
Their kit may be a little harder to use but has so many excellent features it's worth doing. Like playing the piano is harder than playing a tin whistle but so much more rewarding if you take the time.
Go for a Garmin if you fit this category, if not go Tom Tom.
