Window help please

Chaps,
I have an MY99 4dr and have been getting probs with my front windows.
If I drive without putting the windows down, I get little wind noise.
However, if I pet them down then up (without opening and closing the door) I get lots of wind noise.
After investigation I can see a 3 mm gap in places between the window and the seal (at the trailing edge of the window above the door handle).
It appears that with the door open, window closing is unhindered, however with it shut, the window seems to snag slightly and pivot.
Also, I get a clonk when it starts to go down or up now- only recently started.
I'm thinking that something may have been disturbed when (if) the door panel was removed for leather trimming (the insert around the handle is trimmed with leather).
Has anyone had this before? and how do you get the whole door trim off wihout damaging it for investigation of the winder mechanism?

I have exactly the same problem. This has developed in the last week or so on MY MY99 also with leather. I will be having it looked at at my service but that is not until 13th Oct.

I had this problem on my '99 uk model. Took it in for a service and they replaced the seal, no probs now.
Before i took it in it lifted a piece of rubber out from inside the doorskin, this could be the clonking you refer to.
Get it looked at, winters on its way!

Mine's exactly the same - close the front windows with the door shut, and they don't quite close all the way. Open the doors and the pop up to fully closed!
Put it down to the frameless doors, pressure against the rubber and not quite powerful enough motors.
Have to admit, I just run with the open door after shutting routine to get rid of the wind noise too.
When parking up, I always make sure windows right up before leaving.
I know it shouldn't do it, but I call it character

I get this on the front drivers side and now also on the rear window.
MY98 with leather but think it is the seals as suggested earlier.
I'll sneak outside with the talc and oil and give her a jolly good seeing to this weekend.

I have had alot of grief with this issue. To see how bad it is try this.
From outside the car close the door and see the position of the window glass on the rubber seal. Open the door and wind down the window. Put the window up (using the auto switch) again with the door closed and you will see that the glass sits in a totally different position. This is clearly a design fault but one we have to live with.
I had the seal replaced but the problem returned after a few months. I finally got Lancaster to adjust the window to stop the noise and I also use a spray (some sort of feed like you use on leather but this one is for rubber) to keep the seals flexible. My window has now been fine for about a year.

sickboy - I had *exactly* the same problems on my MY99.
Clonking caused by the "Subaru Security" sticker - remove this (with hairdryer) and it will go away, honest!
Gap at rear of window caused by too much friction on rubber next to wing-mirror. Dealer fixed this for me by adjusting something inside the window-lift mechanism. A lubricant would also help.

It amazes me that I've not seen this posted before.
Looks like talc or lube is the way to go.
I get a smeary mes on the window glass near the mirror. Anyone see that too?

Well the rubber lubricant is called er rubber lubricant and comes in a yellow spray can, normally found near the WD-40. mind you I'm sure you can use WD-40, you can use it for everything else

I'll look tonight and reveal all tomorrow! I think Paul is right tho, I think its called rubber lubricant ( as opposed to rubber lubricant ie ky)

Mine does it as well on both the front doors,along with all the other things which supposedly affect 1% of cars such as
- overboost(very bad but now sorted)
- piston slap(just enough to be annoying getting fixed soon)
- clutch judder(not too bad)
- cracked front discs after 10k miles.(replaced with 4 pots)
- stiff 1st gear(comes and goes)
- 4th gear crunch that went away by itself
- hesitation between 1.5-2.5k rpm (on my98! not too bad)
reading the above you would think I would be p***ed off but I'm not,far from it in fact .
PS Do your doors also seem to drop when you open them with the window fully up?.On my car the glass presses very hard against the seal at the top and pushes the door down until it clears the seal when it pops back up.
I think this is tied in to the same problem.

my99 with clunking noise when window goes down.
It got to the stage when the clunking lead to a bang and the window wouldn't move. The panel had to come off and the screws holding the window arms had to be put back( they had fallen out 3 of them! ). Did that twice over 12 months.
Now ok but it will go again.
Do as most do and shut the window when the door is open. Obviously when stopped.

Any problems such as this are surely covered by warranty, MY99 is due for a service mid october, I've experienced problems with the drivers side window (ie additional piece of rubber being excreted when closing the window)I'll get them to check it out & let U know.

Almost certainly clonks can be put down to loose bolts on the window operating arms in the doors. I've had them tightened twice (MY99 under warranty) and its happening again. Next time I shall do it myself and put Loctite on the threads. This was also the cause of wind noise on mine as window wouldn't fully go up because of slack in the mechanism.
Washing up liquid is about the best rubber lubricant there is, its cheap and gentle on your hands!

the stuff in the yellow can is called Nylon lubricant, and after a few days it seems to have worked.
I found wiping it on and spraying some in the grooved part of the seal, then wiping did the job. Shame it's such a massive can. Reckon it will last for decades (unless I get in to rubber fetish gear one day...)
Spraying from 6" away as the instruction said would be a no go!

I have a simple cure for this problem which I've been using on my MY99 from virtually day one.
When you've had the drivers window down and put it back up again, thus whistling noise starts, try putting the window down and back up again by flicking the switch as quickly as you can do it. This seems to give the motor a little extra surge and thus forces the window back over the seal.
Works fine for me so give it a try.

For all you rubber fetishishts out there
I use some sort of pink-purple rubber grease lubricant, and the VERY small quantity [snuff tin] I have has so far lasted me about 10 years! It's a bit like 'Helerine' oil in its effect - [if there are any sparky's out there.]- everything slides easily!

I will try to find out what it is called as I got it from work.
It works on EVERYTHING rubber, such as seals, exhaust mounts, gaitors, sleeves etc. Not tried it on anything else yet...
