Cool

From Auto Express yesterday:

Subaru's 'boxer' engine has grown up, with the unveiling of the all-new horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine.

Announced at the Paris Motor Show, the new engine will be used to power the Subaru Outback, an executive estate with go-anywhere ability.

The new three-litre engine delivers 207bhp and is only 20mm longer than the four-cylinder 2.5-litre cousin. Its overall compactness is helped by the use of timing chains as opposed to a wider belt. A new diecast aluminium timing chain case, meanwhile, helps to keep weight to a minimum as well as further reducing noise.

Will we be seeing this in turbo form in future Subarus?

If the EJ25 has the same external dimensions as the EJ20, then that is a pretty compact 6-cylinder motor if the block is only 2cm longer.

The SVX motor was quite a lot larger and heavier.

The original SVX engine was a 3.3 litre 6 cylinder 24 valve DOHC Boxer engine. It was considerably bigger than this new one.

The compact nature of the new one is what makes it possible to shoehorn it into smaller cars like the Impreza. I'm sure that it won't be long before a tuner shoves it (with a turbo) into an Impreza.
