Unhappy DIESEL IN PETROL.......

OH yes i did this last night , just leaving Northampton on my way to southend and i filled up with 40 quids worth of super , but not super un-leaded ............ super diesel , i was in a rush i just picked up the nozzel and away i went ,.......the night was over before it began..... I rang the AA and they sent some one out with a low loader ... . THE AA bloke said it would cost £150 to do and cannot be done till Monday..But the night got better it was a freind of mine.... , he took the car back to mine and as he only lives round the corner to me he had a pump to get rid of the diesel , so half hour later the diesel was sucked out....40 bloody quids worth..then was the fun part ..i put a couple of cans of petrol in and tryed to start it .... OH MY GOD it looked like a tyre factory was on fire , ive never seen so much smoke and the smell ,55 mins later the car was ticking over and revving sort of ....i made a mad dash for the local garage bouncing down the road and making funny noises filled the car up and then of to southend at 9.30pm got there at 10.55 . the car ran ok ..Started it up this morning and it juddered a bit .... What a bloody good expensive night and a lesson that was .....DONT PUT DIESEL IN PETROL

I filled my diesel escort up with petrol once, it drove for a while as i didnt realise. then cut out as if running out of fuel.

When i realised my error, i simply removed tank and drained it, changed fuel filter and primed sytem fully, turned engine over till it started then revved nuts off it.

Job done

It is so upsetting pouring fuel you have just paid for down the drain though.

Just as well you had a mate....£150 was well OTTT

Half hour labour (hour max)+ new fuel filter+whatever it costs in fresh fuel. Is what it should cost.

If you have a bit of derv in left in the tank (evident by smoke/starting/running problems) lay off the high revs until you've gone through a tank full...diesel reduces the octane level of petrol = pinking = not healthy.

Oh yes...people like you keep me supplied with free fuel for my runabout bangers -which often saw a mix of fuels in their petrol tanks

Not ott at all,Most garages charge between £150 -£200 +vat to do a fuel drain, The AA dont actually do fuel drains which is why The cars have to be towed to a garage and when drained properly its not just a case of emptying the tank which it sounds like has been done here, if it took 45mins for the smoke to clear it was not drained properly.

You can NEVER remove 100% of diesel.

It lines the tank, the lines, the filter. Without a good wash in the degreaser..and then you'll have the tank et all contaminated with degreasing solvent (not rubber hose friendly)

I will say again £150 is too much money.

I say that as we'll quote about £60+vat+fuel to do the same except recovery costs (thats where the money is made )

Ouch that sounds nasty!!

How did you get the nozzle for diesel into a petrol fuel cap?
Aren't they sized differently nowadays?
Surprised i haven't tried it yet as wifeys car is a diesel and at 08.20 i am not always the most switched on individual!
Hope there's no lasting damage and all is well now...
Lexx.

Disagree on price ofcourse dependant on where you are in the country. I probably tow 2 cars a week into garages with petrol in diesel or vise versa and theres only one garage i know in london that will do it for less than £150.If your doing it for £60+ then thats cheap,Remember there are no recovery costs for these garages as the recovery costs are paid for by the AA.

I agree it to expensive but thats what the garages are charging.

Apparently putting petrol in a diesel £5 to every tank atually helps it.. so I'm told

I put petty in my diesel 306 and nothing happened, topped up with Diesel not even a splutter

My wife filled her HDi turbo with petrol (not just petrol I might add, oh no she went for Optimax), and then drove about 6 miles until the car just died on her.

AA to local Citroen garage, a day later and £208 poorer she got the car back, with no lasting ill effects (fingers crossed) that we're aware of.

Diesel in a petrol I thought was meant to be much worse

Think yourself lucky, plenty of folk put petrol in diesel Mercs and end up needing a high pressure diesel pump(around £600 IIRC) , and sometimes need injectors (between 4 & 6 @£300 each). And then there is the labour starting at 3.5 hours x £95 + vat per hour. BMW's are just ridiculous, they insist on replacing everything and the bill for a Police car that required the work came close to £5000 (hah hah).

If you fill up a Ford diesel with petrol by mistake just go back and dilute it with three times as much diesel...it will run fine. Don't wast money on getting it drained.
