Default Not Impressed

Just had a PPP fitted to my 05 WRX Wagon

Ater a lot of talk about "transforming the car" and "making it the car it should have been" on some threads, I'm a bit disapointed to be honest. The car doesn't feel much faster, just a bit louder.
It sounds much better, and there seems to be a little more top end, but it certainly hasn't transformed the car...perhaps I was expecting to much.

Is it just me ?

For half the money you can still get powergains to match. Ecutek and an exhaust. Overpriced..........I think so.

Are you sure all is well with the car? It should feel quite a bit different. Might pay to get it on a RR.

Are you running it on SUL?

sorry to hear that mate, but i fear something may not be quite right if thats the case.

I test drove a standard WRX before i bought mine, it felt fast, quicker than the FTO i was driving. Decided to buy one, got the ~PPP on it before i drove it. Picked the car up, wasnt very impressed with it at all TBH, granted, there was no flogging it before the first service, but it didnt feel all that quick and it used sh** loads of fuel.

Spoke to the dealer, and a few on here, they all told me to hang on for a while, it still aint loosened up., then bingo, 3k and it feels like another car.

One more note, what fuel are you running it on, there is a very distinct difference in mine when i use normal super, and BP ultimate, it runs far better on the BP (for obvious reasons. But a huge difference in the performance nevertheless.

Hope that may help,

John

Dont know, but when the bloke behind the desk is saying things like "Watch youself in that now till you get used!!" with a knowing grin and "you'll definately feel a difference!" maybe they built my hopes up a bit to much

Mind you £1150 fitted.. thought that was a good price

Have they put everything on I wonder?

Is ther any way to tell if the ECU has been changed ?
Got the blue prodrive marked intercooler pipe, backbox, center not changed, what else is there ?

there were some problems with the old version of the ppp which used a tiny restrictor in the boost pipe that some dealerships didn't fit, but I don't believe the new version uses this anymore as the ecu is simply remapped, whereas previously there was an addon board that piggbacked the ecu.

suggest contacting the dealer again and maybe get them to come out on a test drive with you

Get out there and do a few 50-70 (maybe 55-75 on the speedo) runs in 5th gear. If it's not doing them in 7.5 secs as opposed to 10 sec then something is wrong.

Mine is a WRX300 fitted with PPP as standard, so I have nothing to compare it to. However, it feels really quick and comfortably achieves the above 'official' figures so I assume all is well.

Please do - but remember to do 55-75 as the speedo probably under reads...

I agree, it should be £1600 - fixed price inc. VAT.

Where did you have it done, sounds way too cheap?!?!?

It should add ~40bhp to the standard WRX and ~1sec off the 0-60 times. You would notice this, I'm sure......

Right back from East Lancs road
50mph from road angel = 53
70mph from road angel = 74/75

11 C, Wet, 5th gear... booted it 53 - 75 smidge less than 10 secs !
opposite direction, same stretch of road.. smidge more than 10 secs
so. 10secs
Should be 7.5 (nice link KG386!)
Really begining to think something is wrong, anyone else agree ?

Where is ECU on 05 Wagon?, used to be in passenger footwell on my old classic. still there ?

as I mentioned before you will not see any difference with your ECU, the existing ECU is remapped now with the new PPP, there is no add-on board.

was this fitted by an official dealer?

******** Subaru ******
Price was part of deal when I bought car Sept 1st (Jan 05 car)
Had to wait because they sent an ECU of another car on the pitch to some place in Stoke to be remapped, then swapped them today, and put the rest on when it had its 10K service

Gave me certifiicate of fitting and gave me the silver sticker that says "Please Note, Subaru Impreza WRX Prodrive Performance Pack. Power Increased to 261 BHP. Please inform your Insurance Company"

Funily enough it was attatched to a piece of paper stating " Do Not Give this to customer" !!

Rolling road would solve it for good, any one know one handy in the Wigan/NWest area ?

defo something clearly wrong!, I had an extended test drive in a standard wagon and purchased an 05 wagon with PPP and the difference is MASSIVE!!!!, and not just the noise!.

Std wagon was good but with PPP it is awsome, a std WRX does not pin you to your seat like mine does, oh and belive me the car just gets better, mine has done 6k now and gets faster / sharper by the day!

I think there's been a cockup on the ECU looking at that time 50/70. maybe the new on hasn't been remapped, or a standard one has been refitted in error ?

when i picked up my new Sti with the ppp kit fitted i asked why the car had done nearly 30 miles i waass told that when they fitted the ppp they had to run the car for over 15 miles hitting the turbo in every gear so that the ecu would recognize that the car had had the upgrade fitted which i thought was a bit strange but talkin to a friend who had 1 fitted by a differant dealership he said his car had had the same amount of mileage added for the same reason when his was fitted

I really had no trouble doing runs in both directions getting 7.5 - 8.0 second times. You have done a true 50-70 using the Angel. I did 55-75 to compensate for the fact that most speedos over read. I am sure you will now get this checked out but I have no idea what the problem is. Keep us posted and good luck with your dealer - the extra 20% you paid for just isn't there!!

Ruminator, I can only add to what others have said, as I recently had PPP fitted to my 05 WRX, and I can tell you that it does make a very noticeable difference, and not just in outright acceleration, but greatly increased torque as well.

The torque is everywhere in the rev-range on mine now (I have done 3.5k BTW), and pick-up is much crisper.

I`m also curious as to your comment about a back-box replacement only, as I`m almost sure they should have removed a larger section than that, as PPP fitment comprises of a partial de-cat if I`m not mistaken.

Anyway, as I said, you really should be noticing the difference, and if not, it sounds as though something could be wrong mate.

If you want a rolling-road in the Northwest, try System-R in Warrington. The owner, Paul Jones, is a cracking bloke, and will be only too willing to oblige, I would imagine.

Good luck, and here`s the link for System-R:

I got the same thing with mine, 26 miles.

When i bought mine, the car had to have its registration done before the fitting, hence about a 1 week delay. They told me the ECU had to be sent back and a new one was sent in return.

I was told at the time that they had to do this due to them offering the pack for free now, subarus new terms n conditions

Now how true this was i dont know...

As mentioned by Mike Wood from Prodrive, the 50-70 times are obtained by accelerating through the lower speed. Do not expect to match the quoted times by starting at a constant 50 and booting it from there.

What milage did you have when PPP was fitted. I ask cos I had PPP fitted to my 05 STi uk at the 1000 mile service, and like you was far from impressed. 1000 miles later and the thing flies, so I put the uninspired hike in power at the time, to the engine just not being run in. Give it another couple weeks, and you should start to see the performance lift.

OK, I've done the test incorrectly then as I established 50 mph then accelerated. Going through the speed from.. say 35-40 would make a huge difference

Could be a case of "All the gear... no idea !"

RR should be interesting never the less, to see bhp at the wheels.
Suggested drive train losses expected to be about 24%, so expecting 210bhp at wheels approx. 50 bhp drivetrain losses , but thats 4WD for ya
Are my figures correct approx ?

ps, I thought center was removed only on STi ?

Oh.. and 9100 miles. Had 10K done just because it was in anyway

Sounds like the ECU has not been flashed? I had similar mods to my WRX and as soon as I drove it away I could feel the extra 40-50bhp. Its not possible to lift the power curve by 20% and not feel it so something is wrong.

The small brass restrictor that has been mentioned was fitted to my car, it was too large and the car was boosting to about 16psi I think, they changed the restrictor and it dropped to 14psi if I remember rightly.
