Just wondered what the performance figures are for these cars? 0-60, 0-100, top speed and 1/4 mile if possible. Also, is there a difference between uk and jap spec? Finally, how can you tell the difference?

Type R has two doors, the R stands for something relating to the fact its a two coupe but memory fails me
Usually type r will have lower gearing so slightly quicker midrange.
The only other cars to be two doors are
wrx type r (very rare)
sti wrx type r
sti wrx type ra (iirc there was a special version and a scoobynetter has one but very rare)

They both sound pretty impressive, but am I right in assuming the type r has a lower top speed? About 130 - 140? I take it this is because of the gearing?
How fast (top end) will the gearing in both type r and none type r allow?
Also, how easy is it to get a relatively reliable 340ish bhp out of them?

I believe the final drive speed ratios are:
Type r = 19mph/1000rpm
sti = 22mph/1000rpm
So with a 8250 rev limit:
Type r = 156.75 mph
sti = 181.5 mph (Theoretical)
For around 1500 notes, you could get yourself a decat exhaust system (HKS, Hayward & Scott = 500-700 ) and then get a re-mapped ecu (Apexi power fc = 800). That should easily see you with 330 bhp. Above this, you would have to start looking at upgrading the turbo, intercooler, fuel pump + regulator, injectors etc.
What I would suggest is to get the car fully checked out by a specialist before you buy it.
Also, don't forget the servicing. Classic Impreza's are cheap to buy, but not so cheap to maintain properly.
Once you raise the bhp, don't forget about brakes, suspension, cooling, clutch gearbox....... the list goes on.
It can be an expensive habbit. I have a near standard sti 4 (brakes, exhaust) and is more than enough fun for me. Yes, it would be nice to get a bit more power, but it's a long, steep, and expensive hill once you start modding!
