Default Are people with modified cars but cheap insurance actually not covered?

I just bought an 03 Impreza STi with TSL 333 conversion, 18" PFF7's and Prodrive springs. I'm 38 with full no claims bonus, 3 points for a speeder, decent postcode etc.. and the cheapest quote from Admiral and Elephant is £2080 comprehensive for 12 months. If I go to DirectLine or Tesco it lets me put the car in but doesn't ask for mods like the other two and they quote me £610 and £820 respectively. The thing is when you read their terms (which not everyone does) it says that you agree that the vehicle is not modified in any way.

A lot of people younger than me on here are quoting very low insurance premiums for modified cars and I just wonder if like the fella that sold me the car, they are just not declaring the mods. His explanation was that they wouldn't know the difference because it's a map and fuel pump that can't be seen and a air filter and exhaust that need changing at some point. You might get away with it if your car gets stolen and you never see it again but would you if you killed a child or will they then send the ECU for analysis etc..

I'd be interested in a bit of advice because I need to bite the bullet and get it insured on Monday morning.

Insurance is an ****!

They right royally shaft your bank account if you're honest(like me), and give you dick all for your motor if you lose it anyway!

However, what if some uninsured to$$er killed one of your loved ones?

Sounds like you have a decent conscience mate. Pay now, not for the rest of your life if the unthinkable happens...
All the best,
Lexx.

Check the insurance forum and you should be able to save while still insuring it as modified - for a WRX with PPP I found Asda to be the cheapest - the PPP is listed as engine management and exhaust mods so I'm guessing that covers it...

I only paid £950 with Adrian Flux for my MY01 WRX with ALL mods declared. I'm 31 with 3 points, average postcode, kept on driveway, 5 years NCB.

Thanks Lexx, the conscience comes with age

I don't know if it's still the same but when we were younger a good few of my mates were running around on motor traders policies that were only really any use if you get a producer, when you read the small print you soon realised that they didn't offer them any cover. I guess it's a case if it sounds too good to be true it must be which means it's time to swallow a bitter pill

Also try A plan, they are giving members on here some very good quotes.

They are an established company so no worries there.

I'm happy to declare everything but £2000 is taking the p*ss obviously I want it as low as possible but I wouldn't mind paying £1000-£1250 considering it's got the mods.

I'm having some kind of mid life crisis, I had the usual RS2000's and Mexico when I was younger and then I got all dull and started driving things like 306 Diesels. A couple of months back I just thought stuffit, I fancy something that's fun and I've eventually found the right car. I'd never been in one before and I still haven't stopped smiling, what a piece of kit!

Nice one mate, glad you`ve found the right car for you.

Try A-plan (as mentioned above) as I`ve a new 05WRX, with PPP, and it costs me £670 this year (I`m 42 BTW), and that`s with no tracker fitted either.

Good luck.

I declared everything (424BHP) - its group 20R and with NFU I pay £450 fully comp.
Could be age/occupation/39 years no claims discount helps!
Not sure if they do "UK" Sti's - they dont do Jap ones.
Worth a try though.

I went with elephant.co.uk because I don't have any NCD. £1500 fully comp, 31 years old, 3 points, average postcode, 0 NCD, no tracker.

Most insurance companies won't touch you without 2 years NCD.

Default insurance

having same insurance prob. 30 yrs old, 3 points, full no claims, 98 wagon turbo mpodified with ECU remap, induction/dump valve and p1 exhaust so up to 280bhp. tried tesco and A plan... wanting about £2K, why so much with Aplan as most suggest them.? ended up finding norwichunion and doing it onlone without being asked about mods... £500. But pretty sure not covered so will be calling to declare mods.

what i wonder is whether to declare the ECU chipping as no one would be able to tell? or is this bad idea?

Try Greenlight Insurance, I am 32 and drive an 02 STI PPP with Prodrive suspension, 18 inch Prodrive alloys, TSL Group N exhaust, Defi gauges. I am paying £849 with the car parked in the driveway, this includes protected no claims ,breakdown cover and a £350 excess. A Plan did quote £100 less but with a higher excess and no breakdown cover so I decided that Greenlight were better for me but both companies have got good reputations for insuring modified cars. I have found that most online companies are not very good for modified Scoobies, they tend to be better for Mr and Mrs Average and their average family hatchback.
Oh... and always declare every little mod because insurance companies will always try to get out of settling claims if you give them an excuse to.

Without mods I can get it down to £520 with Privilege, if I add everything but the remap it goes to £1020 and then add the remap and it goes to £2080! So they obviously don't like the remap. My son passed his test this year, he's seventeen and his 1.2 Corsa costs him £1700 TPF&T now that is a sickner.

If you don't tell them about the mods you're not insured, the only thing you have is a piece of paper to show plod if you get a tug.

I think the question here is when should a mod be declared.

Do you declare uprated head-light bulbs, or different tyres?

Do you declare alloys from a 1996 WRX on a 1994 WRX.

Do you declare a different panel filter? What about spark plugs?

If you have a Jap import I think you pay more on insurance as they do not have so much information about the model, and therefore assume that if there are mods they may not be detectable.

I drive a WRX wagon MY94. I have declared some mods - I wont say which. I ask here, how many insurance companies will know (or check) which turbo came with my car, which type of alloy, what brake calipers and are they going to open the ECU to check for chips.

I have 3rd party insurance only BTW.

IMHO your better off using a specialist company that insures modded cars. A friend of mine had trouble in the past getting a payout from a company that he declared his mods to yet thay still tried to get out of paying bacause it was a none standard car. He got his cash in the end but now swears by paying that little bit extra and insure with someone who specialises in modded cars and knows what they are dealing with

A lot of insurance companies just want as much out of you as they can get. I read a post on here a few weeks ago where somone painted there wheels gold and his company wanted an extra 100 quid. They classed that as a modification. I think that is shocking myself
