Talking

You could flash back the ECU for any errors, if the owner doesn't mind that is.
Just a thought.

Make sure the car is started from cold and look out for any Blueish smoke
from the exhaust, signs of Turbo wear.

Listen carefully to the engine for any heavy knocking which could be signs
of an Crank on its way out.

A light knocking from either the extreme left or right of the engine could be
signs of piston slap.

Take the car for a good run untill hot, obviously when driving you'll know
if the gearbox is any good or not, that also applies to brakes and steering.

Once you get the car back pop the bonnet (Engine still running) and look behind the nearside
headlamp you will see a filler tube with a yellow cap on it, remove the cap
and look for any bubbles or frothing, this checks for signs of a dodgy head
gasket.

I would after experience get a full RAC/AA inspection done for a couple
of hundred quid, it could save you a couple of grand !!

All the best with the search anyway bud.

Rob
