Default Statement from TOTB Team on Feedback from TOTBIV

TOTB 4 Response to teams/reps.

Following some excellent feedback so far about this year's event, and also
some minor but justified criticism, we'd like to clear up a few points for
reps to pass onto the team/groups.

1. Grandstand seating- As mentioned, we were let down on the weekend with
2/3rds of what we actually booked failing to arrive on Saturday, and despite
best efforts all round no extra units could be found at short notice from
other suppliers. This will of course be rectified for future to give three
times as many seats for spetcators. Our P.A system was much improved, and
would also have extended to these other seating units had they arrived.

2. Catering prices- these were set by the contractor across site, but we
have already raised the issue of their pricing structure with them if they
are to continue to provide site catering in the future.

3. Timing result displays/feedback-This was a disappointment on the day to
us. We had fully computerised/automated the scoring this year for all 3
events, and should have been able to publish top ten and team points through
the day. This should have been feedback to the pa system/commentators every
15-20mins, but didn't happen properly on the day. This has been raised as an
issue with the entire team, and we plan to have wireless site comms or
similar in place for 2006 to give instant leaderboard updates to displays in
pitlane for competitors and also in spectating areas. In the past we have
found that large screen LED displays didn't work, and therefore another
system of keeping all better informed is in hand.

4. Car club competitor areas in pitlane- we have always pre-marked out the
club competitor areas for previous events, unfortunately this year the site
was subject to a torrential downpour throughout Saturday, leaving the
pitlane open to first-come basis for clubs, as markings were not able to be
laid down due to the amount of water in pitlane. The extended pitlane was
much larger this time, and access restricted to non-competitors. That worked
much better with regard to keeping the areas clear, but we will also have
even more security persons to marshal these areas in addition to those
employed this time. Many more timed runs were completed this year on the
handling and drag strip by more of our competitors, which was a great
improvement.

5. Signing on - competitors will be able to send in a completed signing-on
form along with their entry for 2006, to cut out the queuing times at the
start of the day.

6. Spectator parking queues- to reduce the queuing time to get into site we
have already agreed to move the pay gates fully inside and onto the
spectator parking runway, opening it up to 4 lanes at a time, rather than
just two as present.

Hopefully this answers some of the common questions being asked, and again,
we would welcome feedback via the team reps etc for next year to improve on
what was another very successful Redline Totb event.

Chris,

Just like to say that, yes there were a few problems, but overall it is still a great day out with fantastic action. Just a few points you may like to consider?

1) The idea of a grandstand is a good (especially a larger one) but how about putting some of the grandstand seating around the handling track?

2) I noticed some people went down the strip to watch car on their top speed runs (can't personally see the point of just watching a car flying past for all of two seconds) but could there be a properly designated spectator area? I didn't go personally but heard an annoucement telling people not to try.

3) in the programme we get (when we hand over our entry ticket) could there be a map showing where everything is, then rather than wandering about people would be able to walk directly to wherever they want which should mean they miss less of the action?

Again, I hope these are seen as constructive comments. I personally loved the event especially the fact that Scoobs trounced Evo's over the 1/4 mile!

Hi!
the grandstands would have been facing the handling area and the drag strip, had the others turned up, so that would have improved the viewing all round.
the top speed viewing area was dropped after the authorising body representitive asked for it to be pulled as a point of safety. maybe a further discussion can take place with them over this area.
A site plan could be included in next years programme of course, this will be passed on to the design people!

Why were so many of the cars there this year running dragster tyres? I thought the point of ten of the best was that these were road cars on road tyres not dragsters

hi paul
all the tyres were checked and were dot or e marked as specified, and had road legal tread depth mate. quite a few people had incorrect tyres pulled up, and had to change them on the day. non of the cars had tubbed rear ends, or full slicks.

Hi Chris

Thanks for the reply I didn't realise that the big tyres that some of the cars (CRD supra, Andy Nicolls & Team ICE Subaru for example) were actually road legal. It seems a shame that they don't run on real road tyres anymore like most of the other competitors.

Allowing Changing tyres defeats the tread depth aspect.

You need to clarify that IMHO.. One set of tyres per event IMHO. and no changing.

Chris, If you want a computerised points / display system / db in real time then drop me a mail.. in theory its a very very simple challenge!

David,
it's not the computer trickery that's the problem, it's the displaying it to the masses in broad daylight for a resonable cost.
That last one is the tricky bit!

So none of the cars had full slicks, big deal. The Hoosier and Mickey/T DOT approved drag tyres are a joke for "road tyres". DOT approved is does not mean the tyres are approved for use in the UK, although the rules only state you can't sell (only) DOT approved tyres. On the proper DOT drag tyres the "tread" consists of 2 2mm wide grooves around the tyre, which soon dissapear once the rubber from a few burnouts fills them and the tyre is a little worn. At least the nittos and so on have actual tread, and are a radial tyre.

fair point paul, and at least 3 cars were pulled out by the marshals for having well worn (dot marked) mickey ts, and told to change them which they did.

I still believe though that only road tyres should be used and no fancy tyres. Fancy tyres of any description spoils the spirit of the event I think.
