Oil leak/Emissions fail

Oil leak/Emissions fail
Chaps, some help and advice please.
My 96WRX has an oil leak which is dropping little patches of oil on the drive. Difficult to tell exactly where from, seems to have 3 or 4 different 'drip' positions. Not losing loads but enough for concern.
Also, car was booked in for MOT today but the guy who took it was worried about the emissions, so put it on the tester 1st.
Basically he says it wouldnt pass in a million years as its not only leaking oil but burning it too.
Says the engine is worn.
What is the most likely cause for this? How much is it likely to cost to get it fixed up because the car is up for sale and really i'm after a 'quick fix'.
Could it be something thats a common thing on cars this age?
Any help/suggestions greatfully received.
Cheers
Steve
P.S - if you want to buy it without an MOT you can have it for £3500!! I just want rid!

can't really say what's causing the burning oil - could either be turbo or a holed piston/damaged or worn piston rings.
Get a compression check done, this will identify the offending cylinder(s) (if any).
Rocker covers are a common problem for leakage, as is camshaft and crank oil seals.
