Default Keys

Hi

I have recently bought a 2000 X wagon, and only only cam with 1 key and 1 alarm keyfob. Went to get a new one cut and was told that it could only be done at my local Subaru Dealership.
So I visited by local dealer to be told that a new key would cost £50 +VAT, keyfob £30 +VAT and then £30 to 're-programme' the car!
Can anyone tell me if this is right, or am I having the wool pulled over my eyes?
Anyone had any experience of this?

Cheers

I paid, £37 for new key, £7 to have it cut and £50 for the fob. The first person I spoke to wanted me to book the car in to service to have the key programmed which I thought was a **** take. then spoke to someone a little more helpfull who asked me to wait 5 mins while he got someone to do it there and then!

I had the same problem - new key & fob came to about £120.

IIRC the key has a chip in it and the car looks for it before starting the ignition. My dealer did the recoding for free BTW and asked if I wanted a select my own PIN - DEFINATELY DO THIS!!!!!

Hi

Excuse my ignorance (New to all this) Is the PIN to be used on the keypad in the glovebox?

Cheers

Yes. My dealer didn't charge to programme the key or reset the number for the keypad

Hurumph.... Picked up my new key and keyfob this afternoon....I was reminded straight away that it was £30 for reprogramming and was that ok? What could I say? Spent £120 on new key, new keyfob and programming .

I did manage to change the PIN number though, which is a bonus!

You would think that after spending nearly £100 on a new key and fob that they would consider waiving the programming charge!

Must depend on your dealer as I only had 1 key when I went to test drive the car but the salesman sorted out a second key for me. Also when I had a new keypad installed(due to interference) this was done at a very good rate. I suppose if you have all your work on the car done at the same dealer you get long term benefits.
