Default Dawes Device - tried one today!!

2 years back a mate bought a wrx wagon and imported it himself, being a lazy guit he never put the thing on the road till late last year...

during the months of it sitting in his back garden he bought a dewes device and forgot all about... untill reciently. He never bothered putting the thing on his scoob and instead gave it to another mate to use on his cossie.

heres the thing... i was given it today as when it was put on the cossie it wouldnt control the boost.... no matter what way it was put in, whether it was screwed up or down it made the car run unlimited boost.

i put it on my scoob today and it did the same thing... now there aint much to a dawes device so i doubt it could be broken.

i disconnected the pipe runing between the actuator and the solenoid valve and connected it inline there. thats the only place it can go right!!!????

Does anyone have one fitted to their car.. can you pass on some pics if so?

certainly made the car a dam sight quicker... just a shame it went well over 15psi.... soon as it did that i backed off.

sorry dont have any pics, But this is how to fit..

Follow hose from intercooler to turbo. Near where this hose fits on to the turbo you will find a small hose, About 10mm dia coming from this part of the turbo. connect this small hose to the dawes. Put a hose on the other end of the dawes and connect it to the actuator fitted to the side of the turbo.Make sure you have the dawes the right way around.
Keep the hoses as short as possible.
Note.. Your O/E boost solenoid is no longer used.

Hope this makes sense

Seriously, i didn't realise that the oe boost solenoid was no longer used.... would this be why the thing kept boosting over 15psi.... i didn't chance holding the throttle down to see what it stopped at but i recon it would have gone to around 20-25psi as the needle on the boost gauge was climbing fast.

because of this i had no idea whether screwing the thing in or out was putting the boost up or down... still dont

also i havent seen any other hoses attached to the turbo or intercooler- only the hose attached to the actuator

the more it's screwed in - the shorter it is - the higher the boost.

Hi mate,

I fitted one to my evo 6 today and it works great!!

This is how it's fitted to my car;

The device goes inbetween the vacume pipe between your turbo and actuater.

If you look at the dawes, one end has a 90 degree bend on it where a vacume hose would conect to, this is the end that you adjust it from.

This 90 degree bend is where the pipe from the actuater conects to.

The other end is where the pipe from the turbo conects to.

I fount with my dawes, that it only adjust the boost towards the end of the threads, slowly being more afective with less turns.

On my car, this by-passes the boost solinoid. I have blocked the pipe from the solinoid with a screw.

Like I said, this is on an evo 6 so it may be different from a scooby but I dought it as the Dawes is very simple but very afective.

Cheers Shimy.

confused by the above.... does a UK scoob have a pipe connecting to the turbo (1995 car).... i only see the actuator pipe.

The hose I mentioned to intercooler is the big one that feeds the boost to the engine. I only mentioned this so you would be looking at the right area on the turbo.
You should find a small hose in this area from the turbo, However if you cant find it use one of the pipes from the inlet manifold. One should go to the boost solenoid, use this as it will no longer be used.

right then, 3 pipes connected to inlet manifold, from left to right....1st is for dump valve (fat one) middle one is the one going to the top of the solenoid valve, and then theres the one on the right??? dont know what it's for.

lets test me now.....

what i'll need to do is disconnect the middle pipe from the top of the solenoid valve and connect it to the straight part of the dawes device.... connect the elbow end to the actuator and that shoudl be the job done.... part from the obvious setting up.

Out of interest can i use the same (middle pipe) for the boost guage as well as the dawes..... or can i use the one on the right of that.

Yep thats right will, use the middle one. Best to use one on its own not teed from another.
However, this is not as effective as using the one straight from the turbo as you may get boost spikes using one from the inlet manifold.
Look again, there is one from the turbo..

You can then use the middle one that goes to the boost solenoid for your boost gauge.

Dont know about any of them makes will.
But remember you get what you pay for.
I use a GBE MK 2A. I believe this is the only one that performs better than the dawes.

You can buy from here.

Im running 1.4/1.5 BAR ( 22 psi ) but car is fairly well modified

See what your car is running standard and run it at that or mayby 2psi higher.
Car will feel faster anyway because your not bleeding off any boost before the set pressure.

Just now the car runs 11psi as shown on the boost gauge which is correct for a UK 1995. i was thinking of putting this up to 14psi. i know there is a fuel cut at 14.87psi so unsure whether i will require a fcd or not. i'd probably just back of the boost though.

1.4/1.5 bar...

what have you done to it to achieve that level of boost.
