Question

Has anyone had a towbar fitted to their Impreza 5dr?
I have a MY00 but was quoted £470 by the local dealer. Can it be done cheaper at an independent towbar specialist or is it one of those things that really should be done at a delaers?
Any advice and recommendations welcomed

That is silly money, other dealers will I am sure do it cheaper, I think Puff the Magic Wagon had his done recently.

UK 4doors can be done for £150 with single electrice, presume 5doors are the same cost as there was only one bar listed for the Impreza I think

Andrew

Did mine myself - towbar with single electric was £250 from Subaru - wouldn't do the mechanics again .... but the electrics were a piece of p**s easy peesy.

Dealer wanted 2 hours for the labour - get a deal on the mechanics and do the electrics yourself.

oh, and get the detachable towbar !!!! dont want that sticking outa your baby!!!

Thumbs up

AJC,

Jase Cooper has a 5-door towbar available. He has recently upgraded from MY00 5-door turbo to V5 Type R (the lucky bugger).

Place a post in the wanted section and I'll get him to check later today.

Cheers

Ian.

Question

Whilst on the subject of towing,

Does anyone know what the maximum permissible towing weight is for a 5dr Scooby Turbo?

The manual is of no use and I have several different values for the Kerb weight of this model?

Cheers,

Andrew...

Blimey PTMW pays £315 your dealer wants £470, time for a new dealer?

If you are after a genuins Subaru one it may be worth doing what pslewis suggests and getting it fitted by someone else, chances are their labour charge would be lower, and they may get a discount on parts from Subaru anyway. Wouldn't bother doing the electrics yourself though, as if its so quick and easy you probably wouldn't get much of a discount.

Handy Tip no. 1 .) they are required to fit an annoying buzzer to sound when the indicators on the triler are on, ask them not too, or leave the panel put it behind open, so you can rip that annoying thing out.

Towing weights......

The general rule is that you cannot tow more than 1/2 the gross weight of the towing vehicle if your trailer has no brakes. If the trailer has brakes and there are two types (I can't remember them in detail) then you can tow more. I think it is a bit immaterial as you really don't want to tow any significant weight with a Subaru as it just isn't made for that. I use my 5-door to tow light things in a trailer and get some funny looks, but when it is a lot of stuff I use a Discovery which is a much more pleasant experience (for towing).
If you get anywhere close to 1/2 the weight of the car it really is the tail wagging the dog.

Being the real sad £ucker I am, I have the original sales lit for my scoob

TOWING: Nose weight KG: 75
TOWING: Braked KG: 1200
TOWING: Unbraked KG: 500

I will also admit that up until this time, I have not yet towed anything

It was added as an anti-theft deterrant (for my bike )

Well I tow 1000kg regularly with no problems, trailer is braked and twin axle, had it up to 90 odd (on the track ) and was fine though not as stable as my mates XJS V12.

In answer to CharlieWhiskey, the only use I can see for caravans is when they drive them round dirt tracks behind beaten up old Cortinas.
