My son has a sport. Fuel economy is quite good as long you don't boot it Clutch has been perfect with no problems at all, and brakes aren't the best. I think they have 1 pots up front

Economy is a bit better than a turbo, you're looking at mid 20's
the clutch is cable operated as opposed to hydraulic like the turbos but at the end of the day it's only dealing with 115-130bhp so you shouldn't have any problems.
Brakes are pretty shocking, very early ones have single pots on the front and discs on the rear while later classic sports have single pot fronts and drums. They can be improved slighty with upgraded pads and discs or it is very easy to upgrade to 2 pots from a turbo

loads more info on www.imprezasport.net and a few cars for sale as well

You must really like your Subaru's not to buy something cheaper to run, better on fuel and more fun. Turbo Diesel/HDI Peugeot 306 would get my vote as a daily hack. To me an Impreza with no go it bettered by several other makes of car.

My sister had one until recently. Compared to my VTS it was slow, thirsty, didn't turn in properly and didn't stop properly. Seats were nice mind.
