Unhappy Well, I tried ................ and failed!!

As most of you are aware, I don't see much point in modifying the Impreza.

However, I took out a PPP Impreza a month ago and quite liked the rumble from the exhaust

So, looking around, there are quite a few secondhand backboxes for sale ...... and as its a flange fitting - I could easily change back if I found it annoying ...... hmmmmm, got me thinking I will give it a try

I am insured with Liverpool & Victoria - through Frizzell.

They say that they would discontinue the policy if I fitted another (non-standard) backbox!!

THATS JUST GREAT! Just when I am considering dipping my toe into the muddy mod. waters!!

Bloody Hell Pete!!!

LV/Frizzell must have changed their policy, as I had no problem with my MY99 with ScoobySport system.....

Perhaps you could argue (speak with the head honcho) that the backbox doesn't improve performance......

So they're saying that you can't have PPP for your Impreza (a Subaru option - albeit used)......

I'm sure with your powers of persuasion (sp?) you could convince them

LV were taken over I believe by Frizzel this year (or late last) and following a couple of large claims from mod'd Scooby's changed their policy on such cars. They no longer want anything to do with mods, and will only honour existing policy holders with declared stuff. Even then, they will deliberately price themselves out of the market come renewal time. Give A-Plan a ring

I got a girlie, who said her screen said that the Impreza can ONLY have Alloy Wheels and a Towbar as acceptable mods!!!

Now, if I was near renewal time, I would have the upper hand - I'm not, I'm 6 months away.

When I said that other Subaru owners had been accepted, she said that as I had a new policy (6 months ago) they have changed the terms on the new policies.

Anyway, why oh why, does it take 6 recorded steps to actually TALK to someone!

See you should of done it ages ago when you were a bit yonger and insurers were a bit easier on mods..!

You've missed the boat spending too much time on here going on about 'cockshrink' and the like..!

You could always take a chance if it's only the BB you're thinking of trying. 10 min job to swap over , if you see what I mean..?

Use the money you just saved to buy a Knocklink, fit it to your calipers and the light on your dash will warn you when those 60,000 mile-old brake pads are due for replacement, Pete.

A Plan in Thatcham are only 6 miles away so would be worth looking at for renewal time.

But I get FREE business cover with Frizzel - which is important for me.

I am not about to dump my insurance and lose 6 months cover for a backbox - I may hate the drone of it (plenty of people do and find them unbearable on a long run) ..... I just thought, as they are cheap 2nd hand, and I could return my standard box to the car easily, it would be worth a crack!?

Oh well .................

I do see what you mean, sadly - if I am in hospital and the car is looked at by the Insurance Bod ....... it will clearly be seen that it has a small drainpipe sticking out the back of it!

All of the insurance companies I got quotes from included Class 1 business use for no increase in premium. So long as it's not commercial travelling, motor trade, taxiing, and a couple of other uses, which I can't remember, you'll be OK.

only if you want to risk not having a leg to stand on if you have an accident and you get the assessor from hell.

your insurance is null and void if the spec of your car differs from what's on their records. end of as far as i'm aware.

if you're ever down my neck of the woods i've got a magnex b/box sitting in the loft that you could try, you'll know within 10 mins whether you like it or not

LV didnt want me to declare any mods when I took a policy out with them last Sep.

I wonder what will happen come renewal time?

Now you mention it, my son took out insurance with them last Sept too. Like you say, they weren't interested in mods (on his CRX) nor a couple of SP30s.
Certainly changed their attitude then

I think it's insurers across the board tightening up on modifications. Mate at work retro-fitted factory option foglights and stainless sill trims to his Almera and phoned his insurers (God only knows why!) to inform them. He spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get cover so he could get home from work after they unceremoniously cancelled his policy for modifying his car.

I have my quite heavily modded JDM insured with Direct Line. Found quotes easier this year than last.

Interesting replies ...................

Of course, come renewal time in December I will be in a MUCH stronger position to bend their arm ..... wouldn't it be nice to talk to someone who has some power to assess the situation from a sensible stand point? Rather than a Tele-sales Operator?

I doubt very much whether the BHP would increase, if all the CATS are left intact ... surely its really just altering the note/tone and volume of the engine entering the atmosphere?

I would agree with you there, thought some people claim that their car feels quicker with a new pipe. Mine didnt

The noise makes you think its going quicker ..... its in the mind.

The CockLink stops your engine blowing up ...... or some believe.

The **** Oil Change is a VITAL part of life ....... some would die without it.

I love people and their quirks!!

If recent discussions on Briskoda are anything to go by, they'll cancel your policy!

how pants is that!? presumably the cirumstances of the claim were taken into consideration before the extent of any mods?

for example i had a high claim in Dec 2003. looked over my shoulder fractionally to change lane after just pulling off from lights in a queue of traffic. it wasn't safe to change lane, but when i looked back round the van in front had suddenly stopped and i ran into the back of it (@ approx 20-25 mph).

now could someone at any insurance company tell me what effect any of my mods had to do with the accident? and why that should affect anyone's premium or ability to obtain insurance other than my own?

Pete,

I assume you have maximum no claims bonus which means you will lose nothing by cancelling your policy half way through the year and starting up with someone else.

No offence but at your age you will easily get insurance, modifications or not.

You seem to be under the misaprehension that you lose the remaining 6 months of cover and get nothing back, but they will reimburse you pro rata. You might lose a slight admin cost, but if the new years insurance is significantly cheaper, you will still be saving money.

Give it a try, and try admiral elephant and privilege at the same time.

Thanks Adam,

Its not true that its pro-rata, unless its now changed ......

Last time I looked, if you cancelled after 6 months you lost the WHOLE years premium!

think you shoulod check that properly, possibly after asking to speak to the manager when they refuse to insure your modded car.

I have cancelled a few policies half way through and have never lost much more than £50 more than pro rata.
