Default Petrol smell and poor idle

Just had the MAF replaced on a version 5 type r due to inconsistant idle speed. Car stank of fuel before and thought this may cure it - still really smells of unburnt fuel. There are no leaks. Idle is now at a consistant speed but feels very lumpy. Not had the car long, recently changed from a UK turbo - the type r seems to be using about half the fuel as the UK turbo?!

Running on Optimax without booster - can is not mapped to 98 octane

Any ideas?

OK - now tried putting booster in - no difference - still very strong smell and lumpy idle

Someone must have a suggestion?

Maybe if I ask something more sensible like Do chavs drive Subarus or who else needs the Shell Optimax Exige card, I would get thousands of replies.

Anyone?

What is co'd? The MAF was changed by Power Engineering who reset the ECU and the fault code reader reads no faults. They also did an emissions check hich was well within limits. They commented on the smell too but said it was not leaking.

Temp Sensor??

OR could be another dodgy MAF!! Remember they are ever so delicate!! It could well be the new one!!

Take it back to PE and ask them to change it for a working one.

But, I would point to the temp sensor is telling the ECU that its cold (when of course its boiling at the moment!)

could be the lambda sensor which can go after MAF as a result of running rich.

Happened to mine not too long ago.

MAF is OK now - idle is not inconsistant - just lumpy. Temp guage is reading normal and fan is working OK - no CE light

Lambda sensor. Can't account for the fuel smell though.

Knackered lambda will make it run extremely rich hence fuel smell and rough idle.

Thanks - anyone know where the lamda sensor is? Do not want to pay someone to do it if it is just a case of unplugging and swapping it over. Its a v5 Sti type R, '98.

Question

I had a split in the petrol cap seal that caused a petrol smell around the car...
