Default What scooby would you recomend on a shoe string budget?

We cant all afford 20k on a car , and Im certainly in that position.

What kind of Scooby would you recommend with a budget of around 5k?

Ive currently got an N Reg standard 2 litre non turbo, but obvioulsy would like to upgrade to Turbo, but not too sure what I should be looking out for, for that kind of price. Im selling mine for around 2k.

Cheers bud, Ive already looked into the other costs. Ive got more than 5k in the bank, but im putting most of it aside to account for the additional costs. Ive got quotes on insurance etc so all is accounted for. Now all I need is the car.

GTi-6 tuned to 200 bhp makes a sensible alternative - great handling and sound & sub 6 sec to sixty and 30+ mpg easily - eg I have one owned from new latest shape, pretty much mint (cost £22k) and is currently worth £5.5k!!

87 subaru gl-10 89 era, 89 should have full time 4wd and rear lsd. sunroof, too. cheap turbo and any other 85-94 subaru l-series part will fit. parts from an rx will fit the same, same motor, hi-lo range full time tranny with center diff lock fits the same, 4wd button will lock the diff, same mechanism, same clutch and drivehsaft and axles as well

doors from a sedan will fit on a wagon, and the before the front doors all the parts are the same for 3 different body styles

A 25 year old Subaru pick up that's fine for taking feed to the sheep up a mountain but a bit iffy on the road, unless you keep it to the backwaters.

On a similar theme, could I get a reasonable wagon for around 4k with around 260bhp or more.

If i only had a budget of 5k odd... id look toward an import. I recently bought a second scoob for retail as a bit of fun. Picket up for resonable price, '95 plate and is absolutely mint.

So id look for a 95 wit low miles import, in perfect nick.... 240bhp, cant complain.

Running costs not as high as Sti Versions (lower gearing, cheaper brake pads etc).

MGCVK : you could get a MY95-97 UK wagon probably for that kind of money, or possibly a V1/V2 import wagon. There were a couple on pistonheads.com recently. V1 Wagon, low miles, £4k in silver for example it the one that springs to mind.

A young lad near me had a Impreza sport, and put a Sti engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension etc, and insured it as a sport for cheaper insurance.

And yes he is a silly **** for doing it.

I'll have a look. I'm trying to persuade the Mrs that a wagon would be a practical family car with a big boot! And I quite fancy owning a classic scoob.

But you'd need to spend £3k to get a GTi-6 up to 200bhp, unless you have one of those magic filter/chip/exhaust combos.

If I had £5k for a Scoob, I would go for a nice clean bog std UK Scoob as the running costs will be lower. Theres a nice 98 model in the for sale section for £5995 IIRC.

Pretty much what dreamweaver says, IMO, go for as low miles as poss regardless of age, but obv within budget. Leave mods alone. Get one that has the exhaust etc.
Uk cheaper insurance, if your ego can take a wagon i think ins a bit cheaper again.
If it has a few very minor things to do, that you could get done in time, you could haggle for cheaper price.

Hi Tyrone, Don't let people on here put you off, they tend to start rambling on with suggestions of cars that your not interested in...

You've odviously already thought about running cost and insurance.

With 5K mate you'll still pick up a half decent Scooby, As someone said before a UK would be cheaper to insure and still as fast as a WRX. With 5K search around and you'll find a version 4 uk on say an R reg, this will come with the better front end, and better interior. This would be my choice.

Don't forget you've got 5K but if you see a Scooby up for around 5400 or 5500, just wave the 5K in there face, most people are willing to take less anyway,

Hope this helps, Cheers Shimy.

Hi,

Just thought id put in my 2ps worth. I had roughly the same budget 4 months ago looking for a scoob. Dont be disheartend, they are out there. I went to see a few dogs at massively varying prices but I eventually found a mint 96 Blue WRX on 50k miles. It has been totally flawless since ownership. I know its early days but the only money ive spent on it is a service. I very nearly got put off buying it from reading the posts on here, "it will blow up one day blah blah blah" but from my experience it is been the best car ive bought and couldnt recommend them enough. You pays your money and you takes ya chances I guess.

Good luck anyway.

Sorry one more thing...the WRX import is about a second quicker than the early Uk models (4.9 to 60). You will also get better seats and spec with a jap...maybe im just trying to convince myself as i bough one. :-)
