Default The Life of a Backbox

I often see BackBoxes advertised on e-bay or even in the For Sale Forum.

After I took out a PPP MY04 Impreza which had a Prodrive Backbox on I have been interested in 'maybe' doing the unthinkable and buying a backbox to give more of a growl ( NOT a loud growl, just Prodrive level ).

I still have the original backbox on and its fine, but eventually it will start blowing.

What is the life of a BackBox? An aftermarket BackBox? And why do people pay good money for a 5 year old BackBox if its only got a year or two left in it? OR are they Lifetime????

ALSO< I have been told that they are allright for a few months - but, when a longer than local journey needs to be undertaken they are very wearing!! and many people sell them due to the constant rumble which gets tiresome very quickly - true??

Had a HKS hyper muffler fitted for the past 5 years and have not thought about it at all, untill last weekend when i was changing the arb and had it up on a set of ramps i had a look at the back box while i was under the car and was amazed at how little corrosion there was on the whole system including decat d/p, especially cosidering that HKS exhaust have a stainless backbox with a mild steel center section.

As for the noise i will admit that on long journey (4 hours+)i use a bung to stop the drone, as the noise can really give you drone fatigue, but for 99% of my journeys (not a daily drive) i use it with out the bung.

NB - PSLewis is thinking of modifying

Noise wise you'll be pretty safe with the Prodrive backbox.

Life - If you buy a stainless backbox you should be pretty safe for a good few years. I've had the same backbox on for 5 years. It looked like it had been fitted on the car from when the car was new and it still looks the same condition.

I think its great going to and from work and my weekly blast down the lanes but the girlfriend complains about it and I find it a pain in the **** when i have some1 in the back or driving through estates at night.

And just how will that work then??

I am NOT after any extra performance - no more power = no melted engine!

yeah it may not change things much ,except for noise, but the whole system from down pipe to backbox, was designed specifically for your engine, ie restrictions. so you will be modifiying!!.so yes chocolate engine it could be!!!

Wink

When you change your back box you can say good bye to quite motoring....fact.Yes it does get abit annoying when you have passengers in due to raised voice levels.Performance gains will be negligable.so the only reason to change is the "rear look" and the "here i come" factor.I have dismantled a rear box and there is nothing in there that stops the flow of gases, its just a straight pipe with holes in it wrapped with fibre glass and set at an angle to cause the sound to swirl around and be muffled by the fibre glass. The louder the box the less fibre glass and a straight in line pipe out. your choice as to what you want powerman

I would like the Prodrive level of noise ............. but, I am very aware that I HATE to draw attention to myself.

I am one of those 'Sit in the corner and be quiet' types

Best bet Pete is to go to a scooby meet and talk to a few owners and listen to the sound of theirs, its abit of a lottery but its probably fair to say that any backbox made by subaru or its authorised suppliers will be fairly quite but a bit noisier than standard

Have you ANY idea how dangerous that would be??

It would be safer for me to attend a Klu Klux Clan fancy dress party dressed as Al Johnson!!

Pete,

I've got a ScoobySport backbox (and associated system) on my MY99 - I "umm'd and ahh'd between the Prodrive & Scoobysport, and went for the latter.

Nice deeper burble on idle and even nicer sound when "making progress"

I bought mine as a cost-saving exercise My MY99 was used when I bought it, so the backbox would have needed replacing soon anyway. It was cheaper to buy a used box (off Scoobynet) than to replace with the OEM system

Mine cost about £150 - they hold their value very well (one of the few Subaru-related upgrades that does!!!)

Pete,

The Prodrive exhaust is actually pretty quiet below 4k rpm, its above that you get the real growl from it so on motorways its not as bad as you think
