Would you buy high mileage?
Well would you?
Been looking for a 98/99/00 sonic blue and seen about 20 now on autotraders website - some look just what i've been looking for but some of them have mileage of 90,000+, how bad is this? Am I better off looking for low mileage, how do the classics take to high mileage?
The car I (eventually) choose I would like to keep for 5 years+
Read an article in Test Drive mag last month about long lived cars including an Impreza Turbo with over 90,000 miles on original clutch and turbo but had cost owner £20,000 in fuel costs in 8 years (as I recall)!!!!
Can these cars do big miles and still be used everyday?

High mileage is OK but you have got to have the full history for peace of mind. Most modern motors will eat up six figure miles easily as long as they have had some TLC.

i cant comment about owning one for years, but my old classic had 99,000 on it when i sold it, bought it with 87,000 that was in 9 months, never had any issues what so ever whein i sold it it drove brilliantly, my present classic has 85,000 and drives like new, from what i have heard from friends and from my own experience, the Uk cars have a very good shelf life given a good history, wouldnt bother me as long as i could check the car thoroughly with a expert, i did and theyve been brilliant

Mmmmmm scooby regular now - must come with 30 posts.
I am of the mind to still consider the high mileage cars if they are up to the spec i'm looking for with the FSH and look to be cared for.

theres people wanting to buy mine now with 90k miles and there not botherd at all about it, they know its cleaned every day andi change the oil every 3k etc etc
if its looked after, i wouldt be to botherd about the miles

Depends whether the price reflects this.
I bought a Forester with 100k on the clock. The car was 3.5 years old with a full Subaru history with one dealer. I called up the dealer to check this, as well as confirming all the work that had been carried out on the car since it was new!!
A similar aged car from a dealer with half the mileage was twice the price. One of the differences is that the car from a dealer would have a years warranty, where as privately there is no come back.
I totted up the cost of major components that may fail including a full replacement engine, as well as gearbox, suspension, etc and it was less than the difference in prices.
Not the first high mileage car I've bought, and I doubt it will be my last.

high miles don't bother me - but it's AMAZING how many people are still put off by it.
I dipped my toe into the murky waters of selling a few months ago - I was suprised how many were put off by the high miles (although not high in comparison to the age - it was just that others on the same year could be found with less miles)
Mine also had a new engine put in (under warrantee )
Having said that - this site is the WORST place to sell a car!!!! People want soemthing for nothing!!!
Mine's just turned 90K (MY99) - still on original clutch. About to be serviced (the biggy) - never misses a beat (touchwood!) Looks and drives as good as the first time I drove it over 3 yrs ago Actually finding it hardto justicy a replacement (but don't get me started!!!!)

full service history with subarus dont neccesarily mean its not been abused at some stage and lets face it if youre unlucky enough to have a maf failure its gonna knacker the engine anyway regardless if its not spotted soon enough,a mates sold one that he had 2 rebuilds on within 6months under subaru warranty car was a my99 no fault code bein produced on first rebuild 2nd time we asked them to change maf aswell anyway!!! mileage were 50k not tryin to put you off its just a bit of a lottery with a scooby whilst mileage wouldnt put me off as my my/00 as done just 38k and needs syncro sortin on 5th (not impressed, tho needs a clutch soon so will get sorted then)out of about 5 of us with classics mines the only one not had a rebuild yet tho i expect one around 50k based on my friends experiences.(in that respect youre probably better off buying a high mileage one thats already been done if its been done by a decent garage/dealer/specialist).

Bought my first Impreza in March 2001, an MY95 Turbo 2000 with 140,000 miles on the clock.
I sold it 3 years later with 175,000 and it was still running like a dream.
If they're looked after, regular oil changes then you shouldn't have any problems

It's more to do with how the car's been treated. Opened my eyes just how much cars get ragged at events such as Scooby shootout...
If it's a one owner car, this speaks volumes (well to me it does )
