Default 04 WRX Whining Noise

Whining noise has been bugging me for some time now, only occurs at 67mph.
Went in for it's 10,000 mile service today and to get the noise checked.

My car needs a new differential mounting frame on order to be replaced free of charge. Seems Subaru UK have issued a bulletin on this matter

May I suggest you check the passenger seat.

In my car any whining tends to be the wife.

Can happen at any speed and at any time of the day!!!

Would be very interested in an update on this when you have had the work done, as I have the same thing on my 03WRX. Would like to know if it completely cures it. Just out of interest did you have any grief getting your dealer to agree about a) what the problem is, and b) to carry out the necessary work??

i think nearly every 03 - 04 wrx does this as i have seen hundreds of threads about this in the uk and us.

Have even read of dealers changing the Diff's and still no improvement

No problem, the senior mechanic test drove the car and confirmed the noise.
Parts have been ordered, I will post results when my car has been repaired

05 wrx same although not that loud. As said there seems to be plenty of people with the same noise and a lot who have had new parts replaced under warranty and not cured it.

It will be interesting to hear how you get on, keep us updated..

Keep us informed, my 03 WRX does exactly the same at an indicated 62 mph. Dealers diagnosed N/S/R wheel bearing and replaced it last week. Guess what - it's still the same!!

It's a harmonic noise.......think there's a modded diff with damper on it to get rid of problem.

Have you any more details about this please, as I'm sure the service manager mentioned this some time ago, but the technician said it was the bearing.

That's been reported as being the problem before and a few have had this modded damper fitted, guess what.... still the same..!

This has been widely covered on some of the US scooby sites and as far as I've read nobody has had it cured yet.

I've got a WRX 05 PPP and at about 62mph I get this humming sound when I lift off the throttle to decelerate. Car has just done 10,000 and is book in for service next week and I will mention it to them for advice. Bloody annoying as this noise has only just started in the last few weeks.

When you lift off and hear it what happens if you reapply brakes ever so slightly?

If it's the same as my 05 WRX it dosen't matter what you do it is still there..! The only way to stop it (not that it bothers me) is to speed up or slow down a little..!

Default updates?

Has anyone actually found a cure for this. Read various posts some of which fixed it by changing the diff (twice) and others where nothing worked. I have the noise on my 05 WRX.

Cheers

I had the same problem on my MY03 and took it to dealer who checked it on the ramp and he said it was the TOYO PROXIS tyres, i fitted the original Goodyears and the noise disapeared

Mine too! And just to confirm what others have said, changing the rear diff under warranty hasn't got rid of it. Only thing to do seems to be to slow down or speed up one or two mph.
