Default when did UK STI 7,s come out???

what year did subaru start selling the UK version of the sti 7?a mate of mine has been to look at a car on a Y reg. the hpi and the seller say the car is a UK version, but the car looks blatantly like a JDM to me,it has the pink "i"grill badge, folding mirrors, rear wiper and all the badging of an import,is it possible to go to subaru and ask them,or is there another way?

cheers
jon

I'm no expert but sounds like JDM spec to me.. a Subaru dealer will tell you for sure from the chassis number..

Does sound very JDM - the earliest Bugeye STi's were Jan/Feb 2002 so 51 Reg the Registration document may give a clue?

Just had a look at some old mags, STi type UK not listed as new in 2001 and the bug came out in 2003, so probably about 2002.

So that makes a Y plate car an import

Just check the speedo, most JDM cars keep the original KMH speedo and just have the K covered over, so they read 180mph

Deffo a JDM import.

UK STi 7 wasn't out on general release until the 02 reg plates I do believe.

The spec sounds exactly like a JDM so if the owner is lying about that, what else are they lying about.
Plenty of good ones for sale so shop around and be prepared to travel a few miles for the right car.
The guy that bought mine had to drive around 400 miles each way!!!

DVLA are quite spectacularly bad at accurately recording cars' details, especially imports, so I wouldn't put too much faith in what it says on the V5. However, if it has a rear wiper and electric folding mirrors then it's definitely an import, no question.

That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it, of course - it is a better car than the UK bugeye STI, with more toys and a more powerful engine.

There never was such a thing as a UK STi7 as that would have been an 01MY. The first STi Type UK was 02MY which should therefore be an STi8...............

No question - Japanese spec and therefore Japanese import. It could have been first regd in the UK, and would therefore be ambiguous on the V5.

STI 7s (Mike wincing.... ) - ie bugeyes, were available from 2002 onwards, on the 02 reg.

My spidey-sense is obviously working - I just knew this response was coming from reading the post title. I keep thinking one day people will see sense and start calling them MY01 STi or similar, but hasn't happened yet.

Anyway, to be constructive for a moment - UK STi was not available at Y reg. The UK STi's I've driven do not have rear wiper unless I was missing something obvious. Therefore, whilst the car may have been first registered in the UK (i.e. imported brand new), it sounds very obviously like a Japanese spec import to me.

Yup - simple fact is that UK STIs do not have a rear wiper. Nor do they have electrically folding mirrors. These are purely reserved for the JDM cars.

The first ones were delivered to customers in late Janaury 2002, so it's possible that you could find a few on a 51 plate. Many people waited until March to get the new registration plate of 02 st the time.

The 7 digit "applied model" code found on the vehicle identification plate inside the engine bay is decoded in the following way.

1. Series code G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy etc.
2. Body type F=Wagon C=Sedan
3. Engine type 8=2.0L Turbo
4. Year code A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95&96 D=MY97 (facelift) E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00
5. Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch
6. Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA
7. Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD

If you look in the link on my previous post you'll find the rest of the models.

Good side is, it saves me a letter to DVLA

That would be right, the registration can go on 2 things, date of manufacture or date of first registration, now if the car has been registered abroad first or if its new and hasnt been registered within 14 days, they go by the date the car was manufactured, now you also have to take into consideration that an MY01 car doesnt have to be made in 2001, the MY01 year actually starts around the september 2000 when it was released so you dont have anything to worry about

The steering wheel should also give it away.
The JDM cars started off with a 4 spoke Momo, similar to the WRX.
UK STis started with a three spoke silver version. Europe versions had the four spoke version though.
Brian Longs book has JDM STis being launched on 24/10/00.
Europe STis launched on 11/9/01.
