Default Alloy corrosion on Euro import (MY53)

Oh God, after having a good look at my alloys it seems that the baked on brake dust is in fact alloy corrosion...

Will a UK dealer want to help me as the car is a Euro Import from Holland? Or am I going to have to go for a short break on the ferry

Let's not turn this into an import bashing thread, please

Try a milder wheel cleaner such as Muc Off....that way if the wheels are damaged cleaning them with it will not make them any worse. If you use an acidic cleaner dealer may blame the corrosion on this. Good luck Bob

...and when they are clean, give them a good layer of polish to keep out the brake dust and make them much easier to clean next time.

My Spec B rims have corroded around the center caps, all four of them.

I have never used anything harsher than Meguiars car shampoo on them and after I've cleaned them I put on a layer of NXT to make them easier to clean next time.

So Mr Subaru/IM is going to get caned for a new set of rims or at the very least a refurb at the next service.

..and although its completely irrelevant, my dad got four new alloys from Chrysler for his PT Cruiser under warranty due to corrosion. But yes, I know he needs all the help he can get etc....

My brother had a citreon picasso (once) and they changed the wheels nuts due to corroision (and that was on an import..!).

It depends on the dealer as usual.

The fronts on my MY02 are starting to corrode. It gets washed most weeks. But I think a lot of the corrosion is down to break dust. Going to wait until the laquer looks really bad and use it as excuse, to get some new 18" wheels.

All 4 of my 03 WRX ones are going! Rough as a badgers **** round the spokes where the hot brake dust lands on them - but paint is also starting to bubble in the flat "dish" of the rims!
- Just about to start pushing this with the dealer ........

I am just waiting for the "non standard" brake pads quibbles ..... despite the fact I have *never* had any of the wheels on my previous cars do this - and they have all had modified pads .....

Thats exactly where mine are corroding, and doing the same thing aswell. But i`m still on the original brake pads. Not what I expect from a set of alloys after only 29000 miles.

Has anyone actually approached the dealer about this and had any response, i would love to know if somebody has had theirs exchanged/refurbed. Would be good ammo to throw at Subaru.

Cheers

At the end of the day there is a lot of salt and grit on the roads these days which you wouldn't want to not be there in winter so corrosion will occur. My calipers show signs of corrosion too but were like that when I got the car with 12,000 miles on it? New 18 inchers methinks.

Maybe we could all get together and approach one main dealer together?

Harder for them to fob us off if it's not one car with the problem...

Do you want to pay a visit to Welptons? I wouldn't mind having a nosey and would be curious to find out what my car is worth on a trade in - although that might be quite depressing. My wheels are pretty knackered but they have been painted and Kwik Fit were unecessarily rough with them too I reckon.

apparantley BMW dealerships have been offering free car washes to newish BMW owners as the material in OE spec pads contains something which is damaging the alloys. People probably think its just their nice caring dealer but do you ever get anything for free?

Yikes 10k....thats worse than I thought. But if dealers are knocking them out for 12-13k then that is why. I remember you had a prob with Welptons. They have an '04 plate red wrx outside for £17495 and down the road at that motor depot wrx with sti spoiler and a few bits for £16995 new.

Went to dealer yesterday ( Wilsons in Chadwell Heath) Service guy was very helpfull, as my car is booked in for some unrelated warranty work Monday, he said he would take some photo's and send them to Subaru UK. Was quite hopefull that they may replace/refurbish as it is quite rare.

Will keep informed
