Beeping Noise at ?mph
Hiya
Strange one; I've only just found a suitable, er, private road to try my 05 wrx on, and at, er, something over 70mph I heard a beep type noise.
I'm not sure what rpm it was doing (too busy checking the road for obstructions etc.) - is there a red line beeper on the wrx? I don't think I was near the redline (this makes me sound like an idiot...).
The noise seemed to come from the right hand side of the dash, underneath the main slab near the door.
Any ideas, or was I going mad?
Obviously I slowed down as soon as I heard it, but there were no dashboard warning lights I could see.
Cheers,
Ru'

You know how on top gun they have a beep to warn you that the enemy has a missile lock on you? This technology has been integrated into the latest WRX to warn you that someone has a "speed lock" on you, and is recording your every move.

was it a continuous loud noise, if so i get it too. it seems on mine its the rubber seal around the drivers door frame letting air in where the window meets the rubber at about *25mph and above. mine is a 04 wrx.
I know this sounds silly but drop the window a tiny bit when the noise starts and see if the sound disappears (Hold on to your wig as there will be a bit of a draught!!!!!!)

It sort of went 'wooooo!' (okay, I know, but it's hard explaining sounds in text).
And no, I don't think my car's haunted.
I'll have to try it again and see what happens; the road sort of stopped being, er, private shortly after the noise and I didn't want to try again until I'd thought about it and asked here.
No tracker, mobile phone's next to the stereo, no boost controller, no girlfriend in the car (and it's been years since she'd dip below dash level whilst driving ).
More experimentation necessary I think.
Do you reckon that'll stand up in court... "I was investigating a strange noise, which only occured above 5,700 rpm, when I spotted the police car. I pulled over on seeing the blue lights, eager to find out if they had heard the noise too..."

When the noise started, I was overtaking a Merc jeep thing and thought he was beeping me. Slowed down and the noise went. Bit later I sped up, and the noise came back - no other cars around at that point...
Havn't had it in my STi at the same speeds (on private roads of course)...

Are you sure it's the door's, on my my03 5dr it make's a loud whistleing noise around *Hm Cough Hm* 145mph, er sorry Kph, but if you fold the mirror's back it stop's, er it's best to stop before trying to fold the mirror's back, it's a bit tricky hanging out the passenger window at 145mph

its probably the programmable shift light/warning beep, if you look in your owners hand book it tells you how to set it up for audio, visual or audio/visual alarm.

The windows don't seal well on the frameless doors. The seal around the top of the window improves a lot if after you get in, you open the window slightly, and then re-close it. You don't have to be doing 3 figure speeds, it noticeably reduces wind noise around the window from about 40-50mph upwards. Got to admit I've got into the habit of doing this with the drivers window everytime I drive the car these days.

It's a pity you can't give us a better heads-up on the noise. You started off by saying it was a beep yet your "sound" definition turned into a woooo.
If it really is a beep then Bob Rawle's answer is the only thing I can think of as being the cause. If it's as you describe then it's air whistling over the wiper blade on the drivers side. Bloody annoying when it happens, but usually (and thankfully) at very high speeds.
Hope this helps.

It was similar to a 'woooooooooooo' sound, but it started (and stopped, when I panicked and slowed) pretty suddenly. Almost a 'pwhooooooop' effect.
The pitch of the sound was, at the time, more akin to a warning bleep than wind noise. Years ago I had an Audio 80, and that had a warning buzzer which sounded if the oil pressure dropped below a certain level when the revs were above a certain level; if the oil was low and I ragged it around a corner it sometimes came on - this was what I was afraid of!
Anyway, if I chance on a suitable stretch of private road again, I will check the sound. If I had regular access to an airfield I would record the sound...

The hooting is the intercooler tray rubber seal flapping around.
There's too much air flow at "high" speed through the scoop for the WRX IC to cope with and it forces the rubber seal outwards, causing a hooting sound as the air escapes.
Frightened the daylights out of me the first time I had it.
Moving up to an STi IC and tray doesn't let this happen.
