NEWBIE TO THE SITE. NEED SUM ADVICE
hiya every one. Ive just joined up so sum help would appreciated. Im planning on buying a scooby around mid-august this year. Im lookin at one no more than 3 years old. I would just like to know about the realibility of these cars. As long as they are serviced on time, are they hassle free? The reason why i ask, at the mo i drive a vw golf mk3 vr6, and its time to move up. Im 24 now, and since 17 i never had any major problems with the cars i owned- and the next car i buy, i will hold onto a while. Any help appreciated. Also, just for the future, wheres the ideal place to get a re-map and air induction for these cars. thanx.

if so, wont this make the car louder.

make sure the car your buying is with a full service history and then make sure you use good oil at the proper service intervals[motul 300v 15w-50] .especially the timing belt.if it is serviced properly you wont have any probs.if it is a standard car.
if the car your buying has had modifications then you should seek advice from whoever done the mods to make sure their done properly.[ie done by a professional] or wALK AWAY
future mods ; best to do a search or ask around when you come to do them.
i would reccomend bob rawle for remap and harvey smith for mods.advise

The reason why i asked was if its loud or not, is it gona be waking up neighbours at night or people at the other side of the road are gona turn their heads before they have even seen me! LOL!

Hi
You ain't even got the car yet and you're already modding it
I'd guess you're looking at late bugeyes or early blobeyes. I'd recommend blobs as they are slightly more powerful as standard, and consider one with PPP fitted which should see you with a WRX PPP with 260bhp and 0-60 in 4.8s or an STi PPP with 300 and 4.6 (although the figures semm close, don't be fooled as the STi is much quicker on the road). If you can stretch to an STi then do it, as if you get a WRX you will probably regret not going hardcore from the start. As said earlier, induction kits are a waste of money and may even reduce power (hot air) and introduce unreliability (MAF). TBH, the cars are powerful enough to start with and there are many advantages to ignoring power mods and focussing on the suspension and brakes. As Pirelli say, "Power is nothing without control" When the chassis can handle more oomph, then look at decat and remap.
Edited to add, people will turn their heads anyway. The louder you get, the more it happens but after a point it stops being admiration and becomes resent and disapproval.
Oh, and remember to wave and attend any local meets

Welcome.
They are very reliable if you observe the following rules:
1) Warm it up and cool it down properly
2) Don't drive it like a joyrider, i.e. redline in every gear all the time, dump the clutch etc...
3) Get it serviced EXACTLY as the handbook reccommends by Subaru or -many would argue even better- an independent Subaru Specialist.
4) Run it on decent petrol (preferably Optimax) and the RIGHT grade of FULLY synthetic oil
5) Get used to the car before you mod it. Research any mods carefully and steer clear of induction kits and dumpvalves.
Get one with a FSH and speak to the owner, if you don't like them, chances are you won't like the car. Get a HPI and a full independent inspection.
So bare in mind that these cars may be relatively cheap to buy and appear quite the performance bargin, but they ARE expensive to maintain properly and NEED to be treated with respect and mechanical sympathy. If you start scrimping on this/driving liek a prat, expect big bills.
Happy hunting!

3 cats-wow! i never knew that till now. 20bhp-30bhp- is that with a decat and remap or decat alone.
The reason why i asked was if its loud or not, is it gona be waking up neighbours at night or people at the other side of the road are gona turn their heads before they have even seen me! LOL!

Ive seen some Uk spec scoobys with a full decat and a ecutek remap get around 260-280bhp which for everyday driving and the odd traffic light grand prix is enough. As for the exhaust theres many of styles you can go for which dont have to be loud, Ive been through loads of differant exhaust cause I wanted a louder exhaust.
