Question Bit disillusioned

I have had two scoobys(Classic/03 wrx) and have always thought they were the dogs, when you tell people what you drive you always hear compliments and all the motoring mags seem to back the hype up ie 0-60 times in particular.I have just had a drive in a 03 BMW 2.0D and it went like sh7t has soon has you hit the gas it goes and i seem to have to really thrash the Scooby to make it go until the blower comes in(turbo lag?) and it is more noticible from standstill. I have had the odd tangle with AUDI TDis and Golf TDis and they are flaming quick and it seems effortless.ie no screaming engine to get the best start. any thoughts or i am just being too gentle with the clutch/throttle combination from standstill.
P.S my brother has a 330d BMW and he had a scooby STi and he thinks the BMW is brilliant but I wouldnt get one. powerman

What is it with these ******* Scooby against Diesel threads.

Two totally different engines.
How many diesel's have dominated the rally scene for the past decade ????????

Rant Over.

easy now punkie!!

As pointed out though - they're TOTALLY different beasts. The diesels are all about low end torque. They don't have much top end poke (unless I've been mistaken about them!!)

The Scoob/rice rocket brigade are something that's interesting. Granted though, diesels have come on a LONG way, and their oil-burning reputation is dwindling rapidly.

However, in my eyes (and ears), start up a diesel. It sounds like a Transit!
Start up a Scoob

The feeling you got in the 320d is very subjective I'm afraid - yes, there's a healthly wodge of torque, but it doesn't last that long. It'll feel gruntier low down, as the torque is developed much earlier in the rev range and will therefore be a lot easier to pull away fast in, but I suggest you try something objective - say a 30-70 through the gears and watch & time the speedo...then you'll regain some confidence in your scoob's abilities.

Saying all of that, the WRX as std. is a tad underpowered of late, and a little portly (okay, a lot safer as well). The gap has closed considerably between it and other more mainstreem cars, esp. when you compare it to similar cars say 5 years ago, when the gap was larger. I think the std. WRX should be at least 260 out of the box, which will no doubt happen in the next year or so.

It's not just about the car. How many BMW drivers get together each month to discuss what they've just done to their car?...etc....etc..blah...blah. (exluding the mini )

Each to their own I suppose.

I see that loads of BMW M3 drivers are getting the BMW 320D now, as there so fast blah blah blah.

Also I saw the otherday a 04 BMW 320D for £23k where as a 04 WRX costs about 16k so I would expect the BMW to be a better car, but its not, So ill take the extra 7k id save if I bought the scoob over the BMW and spend it on mods to make it faster which would waste a BMW M3 let alone a 320D.

The standard 220bhp WRX is quick off the mark granted (thanks to the AWD) but in todays standards I wouldn't call it anything special.

I'm getting really hacked off with all these people driving their WRX around thinking that they have the fastest car on the road and then come on here moaning when they get a diesel stuck to their ****.

FFS shut up or get a PPP.

we have an 03 Golf GTTdi putting out about 150-160bhp and they pull like a tractor (*cough**chuckle*) from around 1.5k revs to 2.75k revs... its bye bye power though at around 3k which is where the 05 Sti starts to make ya grin. As people have said different engines, in an ideal world I'd love the scoob with the golfs low down torque and the the scoob as is for higher up the rev range... ah well we can wish now cant we

My wife has the Golf GTTDi 140 and I agree with the comments about it being a different drive compared to a petrol car. The BMW is different though, red lines at 5k and pulls like a petrol car all the way there.

A 330D would waste a WRX, annoy a standard STi and in the reality of today's traffic would not be far behind an Evo\Sti PPP, doing 40+ MPG with all the toys

Every 330D I have ever come across seems ok for about 0.2 seconds then the revs run out and they go flying backwards. Not bad for diesel though. you old git

IMO the new age standard wrx is not much in terms of performance compared to a standard 95 MY classic wrx.
Sure the BMW is quick but ITS A DIESEL! If i want a sports car ill buy a petrol car.
OK the beamer may catch a wrx out in traffic or out of a bend here and there but on the track car vs car with no traffic or danger im sure the wrx would win.

330 D
as said
Price: £26,995 - no thanks - ill keep the change from a wrx

184bhp at 4,000rpm and 288lb ft of torque at 1,750rpm.

Performance: top speed 141mph, 0-62mph in 7.8sec (auto 8.2sec), EC Urban economy 30.4mpg (auto 25.2mpg).

Classic scoob wrx with 260 ps should waste it on paper.

Dunno about anyone else, but all these posts seem to be about motorway style 'racing' (or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?).

I don't really go in for that; it's all about how much you want to risk your licence rather than driving 'skill' (I'm not saying I'm that skillful though).

I prefer the twisty stuff; much more fun, not just planting your foot and hoping the idiot in the middle lane doesn't pull out in front of you.

So far (only had the wrx for a couple of months) there's been nothing which has stayed behind me. It's pretty unfair actually, although I'll admit this is mainly due to other lame drivers rather than my scoob being the fastest thing on the planet.

I'll admit that I do go in for a bit of traffic light GP stuff, but only as far as the speed limit (or so), and again nothing so far has been a contender.

So, I guess the car I've got it perfect for what I enjoy doing... Bully for me!

Different cars, different strengths. I run a C32 AMG. When I first drove it I loved the low end immediate grunt that the Scoobs never had( thanks to the Mercs 3.2 Supercharged engine) . But my lightly modded Scoobs pulled hard to the redline( especially the Bob Rawle tuned one) in a way the Merc c'ant. Depends on what you prefer
