Are scooby's that bad?
Ive just been flicking through some technical threads and the ever present issue of engine failure cropped up.
I personally can't believe engines blow as often as is suggested, presumably we only hear the bad stories. There must be thousands of satified scooby owners out there....
I have spoken to dealers and they all tell me that the engines are bullet proof.
I have only owned a 2002 wrx for a week and am loving every minute behind the wheel but reading some of the comments gets me thinking.....
Fortunately my car came with a 2 year warranty from a main dealer but even so i would still like to think i own a reliable car.
Any positive comments out there for a change.
I think they are great cars!

most of the engine horror stories are from either classic grey imports that end up running on crap uk fuel when they are mapped for the jap stuff, so end up detting, or my99-00's where the MAF sensor has failed, again leading to detting.
I personally can't remember seeing a thread from someone who has had engine failure on a newage scooby

Nik,
I owned a MY99 STI Type-R for two years and it was faultless. The V5 are supposed to have weak engines and gearboxes and mine was brilliant. You will hear a lot of horror stories purely because of where you are, the concentration of scooby owners on this site are quite high and so are the horror stories. You may find a similar thing on other car forums. I miss my scooby so much that I am currently selling my £27,000 Nissan 350Z so I can get an STI Prodrive. You get an awful lot of car for your money with a scooby!!
Craig.

ive only owned my 52 plate wrx for 5 mths now and so far no problems now then through my job and talkin to AA patrols subarus seem to be 1 of the cars we never really get called to any i have had in the past 2 yrs (3 of them) 1 was smashed up (2) had a none standard ecu needed taken from a dealer the place that done the remap work (3) high mileage blown valve but it had done nearly 150000 miles
from what i can see its only really high milage cars that get the problems apart from the odd unlucky few
its a case of take care of the scoob and the scoob will look after u

I had a MY99 Turbo for nearly four years and didn't have a single problem with it. My current 03WRX has been going for 18months, again with no problems whatsoever. They are very reliable cars.

Welcome to ScoobyNet paranoia (MY00 owner who changed his MAF sensor a few weeks back as something didn't feel quite right). If you're concerned best thing to do is fit a KnockLink, det is what seems to kill most Scooby engines, the KnockLink will tell you if you are getting any. Mine is going on this weekend

If you're running a standard car, the supermarket pertrol will be fine. If you start doing modifications, then you may need to consider using Optimax as a precaution.
If you have the car remapped at any time, you could have it remapped for any fuel, supermarket cheap stuff or otherwise.

Just had my MAF sensor replaced on my JDM MY96 sti because of failure.
Didn't blow up the engine just idled like a yo yo and ran like a dog.
Getting a knocklink fitted soon so I can monitor engine a bit more.
Run optimax or Esso SUL + octane booster and engine should be alright.

lol my engine went about 2 weeks ago, did an off the clock run on a 'ahem private road, and used it for a bout 50 miles after with no issues. Next day after leaving it to warm up on the drive, about 1 mile down the road the big end went! the car was full of bin bags for the tip so was driving like a granny . managed to drive home but its sounds terrible!!! still... picking up a new engine on the weekend thats been improved from standard

Maybe im getting paroinoid after nearly 5 years 30K from new ans will get a new MAF sensor fotted at the next service
Any idea how much they will be ? fitted ?
in my time ive had the green wagon i have had
New battery at 3 years
Alarm bracket fitted
all under warrenty
and 2 side light bulbs and a headlight bulb
Knocklink
#####
noticed the green light was not working so took it to bits yeasterday and found all the leds had worked loose /dry joints !!!!
so i soldered them back on
a good tip is too check that on knocklinks as it seems to be a common problem .

KnockLink - You can get them from BR Dev. (http://www.brdevelopments.com/index.htm), you need the Bosch sensor as well as the KnockLink itself.
Fitting guide for Classics here: http://stefanostadal.homedns.org/car_mods_gauges.htm
Hope it's as easy as it sounds as I'm fitting one to mine this weekend (+Samco turbo hoses, boost gauge, and LambdaLink. Planning to stealth fit both the Knock and Lambda link, think I have all the necessary bits from Maplins.)

Its the same old thing though, if you look after them with regular oil changes, correct fuel and so on.... then you shouldn't have any problems. As already statd there are probably a higher number of owners on here that haven't had any probs than there are people that have had them go pop
I myself am one of the latter though , but that hasn't put me off the scoob!
