Dear all,

Anyone who has had an offer of an extended warranty on a 2002 car for around the £540 mark should take it up quickly.

I've heard a rumour that letters are in the post withdrawing that offer and increasing it to a whopping £1233 for 12 months!

I'm no expert in law but if they 'offer to treat' and you 'accept' then the contract is binding on both parties.

Call that customer service? Roll on Arthur Daley!

To put it in perspective, £1233 is about 50% of the cost of a full engine rebuild at any of a number of reputable specialists.

Yes, I got the £1233 letter too but I thought it was a misprint! It's in the bin now though .

received mine 313 then went to renew told 555,wrote to sub uk told theyld reduce to 5oo as good will gesture,wrote back to complain at pittance of reduction still no feedback from them,theyre obviously to interested in accumalating money for theyre new customers to give them three years free servicing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No one in their right mind would pay 1200 for 1 years warranty, would they?

I don't think I'd bother if it was the original price, considering all I've ever had go wrong on either of my Impreza's was a single MAF in over 70K miles!

Its all about burn rate. All of the P1s that blew up gearboxes and engines etc have forced up th price and it is just filtering down now. As for your short sighted view that im have done this to pay for free servicing offer you are wrong, as all across the range there has been a £250 increase to allow for the offer.

Subaru Warranty obviously expect to have a few engine rebuilds in the year then. £1200 is a riduculous price and it doesn't say much about what they expect reliability to be like.

In 6 years and 75K miles of Impreza ownership (from new), I've had the following warranty claims:-

Brakes discs cracked (1st 1500 miles)
Front door windows replaced due to glass being scratched
Alarm bracket broke
PIAA spots replaced due to reflectors rusting
Front door card due to elbow rest being cracked
Oxygen Sensor (at 3yrs)
MAF Sensor (at 5yrs)

Don't think I'll be looking at a new car if they expect me to start shelling out £1200 every year for a warranty.

Bear in mind that consumer protection law does require the vehicle to be fit for its intended purpose, of merchantable quality and so on, regardless of whether or not it's still under warranty. A warranty gives you a quick, hassle free way to get relatively minor faults fixed, but if (say) you suffer a premature engine failure, you may still have recourse against the supplier and/or manufacturer under your statutory rights.

Depends on the timing and nature of the failure, and how much effort you're willing to put in.

Personally I think, I would get a £233 one from the likes of online Warrantys and keep the £1000 in the Bank to make up any possible shortfalls in that cover.

I may feel they may have just priced themselves out of the market. IMHO £550 it was steep but a lot of owners and most Dealers would have paid it.

Dealers are struggling not to laugh as they suggest £1223 warranty and quickly move on to offer "Other" reasonable options, they can spot a non earner

Dealer secondhand cars have to have it though IIRC so over a barrel. Dealer said at the end of the day this cost will be reflected in Trade in values

I had both of these on an my00 turbo.......plus a bulb and aircon belt,but that was it for 3 yrs and 76k miles

As I see it I will keep my £1200 and hope nothing major lets go.

I'll live with the odd rattle and a scratched window.

i'd just keep the £1K and spend the rest on an aftermarkert warranty like www.warrantiesonline.co.uk covers most items and use the £1K to backup any shortfall.

You'l be Quidds in IMHO
