The Proven Warranty on my 2001 Impreza WRX is almost up and my local dealer confirms a year's renewal at £1233 - that's way too much. I'd rather put the money aside or just bite the bullet when the rainy day comes.

I looked on the net and tried RAC Warranty and Warranty Direct - both refused to cover a WRX because it's a performance car.

However, I have in my hand a written quote from Warranties Online for £223.48 with my exact car details listed , that is Impreza WRX, currently on 50,000 miles with a stated 10,000 annual mileage. 'The Comprehensive Warranty' cover even includes some kind of AA type service.

I know that the parts covered is not quite as comprehensive as the Subaru warranty (example catalytic converters not covered on warranties online policy) but it would appear to cover say turbos which must be one of the susceptible (and expensive) parts on a WRX.

I believe they also do a 'Comprehensive Plus Warranty' which takes it a step closer to the subaru standard as cats are not excluded.

What I need to do now is to verify they will cover a WRX, ask if they will quote for the 'Plus' warrannty and confirm that I may use Subaru dealers for ant repairs done under the terms of the warranty - if not then the subaru specialist of my choice.

If you have been bearing with me till now, my questions to you my friends are:

Has anyone started this and can you confirm you have covered at the £233 per year?

Has anyone had experience of the claims department?

Have you been refused permission to get work done by Subaru franchised dealer - or they wouldn't reimburse the invoice?

Any other pitfalls or niggles I should know about?

IIRC if you get the extended Proven scheme done before the Car is 32 months it shed loads cheaper but not many peeps know that and no I won't be paying £1223

but as you say save £1000 you can by a load of Cat's for that

I'm considering Warranties Online to replace my Subaru Proven cover. My only concern is the whole thing sounds to good. For my P1 they are over £1000 cheaper than Subaru Proven and seem to cover almost the same things as the Subaru warranty covers.

I had the letter back offering cover for £223 stating WRX but I wanted to make sure they knew it was a turbo model - so I sent an email about ten days ago with some questions to clarify a few points including whether they would authorise using subaru dealers or specialists etc., but no reply yet and I think I might have spooked them. I will phone them up and maybe put someone on the spot and get some straight answers.

AA also offer a £65 annual policy to add onto AA membership - they said they would cover the WRX but note that cover is only three claims per year of up to a max of £500 inc. VAT per claim. According to an AA patrolman I know, if claim was for more than £500, you would have to pay the excess over the £500 settlement. So it would not for example cover a turbo replacment but I suppose the part contribution would help ease the pain.

I should have said I am waiting confirmation that they will cover my P1, as are a couple of other P1 owners.

The online quote seems to be for any car, but you then have to fill in a few more details which they must then run by the underwriters. We suspect we will probably get a big fat "no way".

Tony that's more like it, that's the price I was quoted in January I was confused at where £1223 was been generated from, sounds like unlimited mileage to me.

To reiterate extended limited mileage warranty for WRX's were/are:

1 year extended was £313 and is now £555
2 year extended to 60,000 miles was £539 and is now a whopping £1178!

I was also told extended warranty for a brand new Subaru would need to be bought when you purchase the car and not after 3 years. I find this a bit hard to believe so could anyone with a brand new car like to comment?

I have been quoted £1233, by Subaru.

This is for a P1 requiring year 6 warranty, covering the car up to 80,000miles on the same terms as years 4 and 5 extended warranty, (except a couple of trim bits not covered, but nothing major).

IMHO these £200 policies do seem to good to be true, when you think of the cost involved for an engine rebuild, especially if a main dealer does it.
Would love to be proven wrong though!

I got my quote from Subaru today.

£547 for 12 months up to 80000 miles.

As I only do 8000 per annum I wonder if there is a cheaper alternative?

Any ideas?

I minded to bank the £500 in a slush fund just in case...

Exactly what a Dealer quoted me, but dealer was also bemused by the amount showed me the paperwork to prove it wasn't a Dealer scam.

I only just recieved the letter, I will ring up next week and get it sorted out, not very happy but will go for the £547, better then £1223. (may help with trade in price). But I can not confirm the price till then the letter maybe not a "Quote" but an "Estimate" Maybe the £547 is just a spratt to catch a mackeral and still could end up £1223

I have to organise the free MOT and 3 year service at the Dealers aswell. 3 years just flys by. And hopefully a Test drive in the MY05STiPPP as long as they stick by the Trade in price for my car

I got my quote from Warranties Online today and they confirm they will cover a P1. Quote was £223.48 for 12 months or 60K miles whichever comes sooner. Unlimited claims up to £4K. I can use a garage of my choice for any authorised repairs. The car has to have a FSH to manufacturers specification which can be proved in the event of any claim.

They confirm that all the major parts such as engine, turbo, gear box and suspension are covered. No cover is provided for non OEM parts or failure of other parts due to failure of non OEM parts.

They are also providing free roadside & home assistance in case of breakdown etc.

I can't see anything wrong with the policy, it covers everything I need. Cheque is in the post.

That's a good deal Subaru Proven are £2,500 max claim(icl Vat) and no more than the purchase price of the Car in a year.

I do 30k a year and was planing to keep the car for 3 years (had the car brand new since June 04) hence my waranty would run out after 60k (2 years). I was going to extend the waranty for the 2nd to 3rd years if its £500 Odd pounds not to bad, but over a grand!!
Other option I got is to tdade after 2 years and put the extra grand down on a 06 2.5 Sti

It would also be a good idea to pay for any warranty with a credit card. That way the credit card company will be jointly responsible for any disputed claims.
