Cheapest way of having Sat Nav
I'm after somesort of Sat Nav for my car, was just wondering whats the cheapest way of doing this?...
ie. is there a single unit you can buy?.. or is it better to buy say a palm pilot, gps plug in and software etc...
I've just started a new job which involves travelling around a lot, I have autoroute 2005 here and some nice guy at work has pinned all the site locations on to it, so if there is a system that is compatible with that it would be ideal.
Cinders.

I got the 02 XDAII for £79.99 on contract, then bought Tom Tom Navigator 3 + GPS unit + Car CHarger + Cradle for £150. Sat Nav + Phone for £220 (all in) - Have also put UK speed camera database on so am warned of fixed cameras.
Just the Maps that need updating (have noticed a couple of "issues" - but I believe this is down to the map "suppliers" rather than Tom Tom!

I'd just like to know what people use and what recommendations people can give me from their systems etc.
I'm really after a single unit thats dedicated for sat nav only, I think going the palm way + addons is too much hassle and I just want a single unit.

I use a Navman iCN630 v3 and also a Navman PiN PPC v3 both are very good.
Check ebay there are usually loads on there.
The iCN 630 or iCN 650 are great but the iCN510 can be used outside of th ecar aswell. All are transferable between vehicles in a matter of seconds.

I Use Tom Tom 3 on a iPaq 4150. It's fantastic! Rarely use it around my home town but if I go anywhere else it's bang on.
Already saved me from Speed cameras I didn't know about and worth it's weigt in gold for that.
If I was going to buy another, I'd look seriously at TomTom Go - about £400 with everything built in!

I was looking at TomTom Go as mentioned above, but, being on a budget also, I went for the HP Ipaq navigation pack (TomTom software) and added the speed camera database too. I got it on offer for £230 (this was the main selling point otherwise would have bought the Go) - added a 1Gb card and use it as an MP3 player too for the gym etc. I wouldn't be without it now... comes with everything you need including car mount etc - may just need a bigger SD card though.
Have a look at www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk site - they are about the best and cheapest that I found..

I used an Ipaq 5450 and TTN2 then TTN3 for around 12 months.
The only issue I found was that, from time to time, the Pocket PC OS would freeze and require a re-boot. This usually happened when I was approaching an awkward junction in rush hour in a totally unfamiliar place....
However, as I liked the TomTom interface, I ended up getting a TTGo, which is far more stable, faster at re-routing and a damned sight easier to read. Oh, and you can actually hear the voice prompts, which were almost inaudible with the Ipaq.
Conclusion? If you're using it for business, get a TTGo. It's worth the extra cash. Even though a PPC does other stuff, the primary reason you're buying SatNav is - not surprisingly - to find your way around, and the PPC simply isn't as user friendly for this purpose.

Another thumbs up for TomTom Go. Simple to use, a single box to sit on your dash board. I started off with a cheapo pda set up but there was a maze of wires all over the dashboard connecting the various bits together - also impossible to use on the move, although this is probably forbidden anyway it is handy having the large buttons/ icons to prod at on the GO so you can mute it, change volume if needs be. Can be had online at £396 at Dixons/PC World which is about the cheapest I've seen.
