Default launch technique for santa pod?

Hi all

I am planing to go to santa pod on the 23rd and i want to run up the strip , but im a little nervous because 1) i havent done this type of thing before .2) dont wanna choke on the line .
Has any one done the quarter mile thing before ?
And if so do you have any advice on getting away from the line ?
I am also surposed to be up against my mate in a tuned 200sx and a mildly modded integra type r .
so i wanna do well ( well is an understatement i wanna win!!!!! )

So any advice tips would be appreciated .

2 methods i used to use

Rev to about 6k then dump the clutch

Handbrake on, Rev to about 4k, hold it and release clutch as you normally would (take the hanbrake off too)

Either way your gonna eventually fry the clutch - as i did

i have done a magnex exhaust ?
and he has done an exhaust induction kit ?

Assuming it's a UK turbo the peak of the tourque curve is about 4-4.5k rpm so hold it about there on the line and when the lights go green bring up the clutch very swiftly not sidestepping it and floor the accelerator, then keep on grabbing gears for aprox 14 secs!

depending on the model car, find out your peak revs (mine's about 6,500rpm).

As stated - hold the engine at those revs and slip the clutch when the light changes; depending on how long u want to keep your clutch is how fast you release it.

Then drive on the rev counter (not the speedo) keeping the revs as close to the max as possible thru the gears. Try to do very quick gear changes to get back to max revs (2nd to 3rd is the hardest).

If you've got a quiet back road nearby, have a practise - obviously bail out before reaching the speed limit.

Another factor to take into consideration is the amount of wear on the clutch and what type it is.

When a few people I know, including myself, ran with standard clutches they had slippage problems with launches at anything over 4500 rpm.

I changed to AP organic and can get good launches at 6k.

as Philc says, do some practice launches on a quiet back road. Not too far from home though

cheers guys !

Right my car is as follows ,a R reg uk turbo with,magnex backbox and center de cat , and a forge dump valve.and thats about it.

Thanks for all the tips etc , not usually into racing of any sort but really wanna beat my mates integra type r !

Assuming you get a good launch, you should beat a mildly modded Type-R by a comfortable margin (I'd consider 0.5secs + comfortable when drag racing).

Your mate in his modded 200sx will likely be running in the 13's so it probably wouldnt be the ITR I'd be worried about

i did a 13.4 in a UK MY98 with full decat, blitz induction and a dawes device set at 1.0 bar. i think it was about 260 bhp at the time.

slowest was 14.2

If you get into the 14s be happy.

Just browsing through some old time sheets 14-16 seems to be the norm for the Impreza WRXs.

My mate's old intera type R used to do 12.8 at the pod, so beware. If it has a supercharger, and/or NOS then it could well run low 13s and give even a modded WRX a run for it's money.

In january the pod will be quite slippery, don't try and launch at over 6000rpm, 4500 is probably better, getting the synchronisation of clutch and throttle is the key.

cheers chaps for the advice , the integra has only a cold air induction kit and hi flow cat exhaust.
Im not worried about the 200sx cos he will beat me easy!

its the integra that i thought would be closer conquest?

I went up against an intregra type R at the Jap Performance show.
Lost by 3 secs I ran 13.6 @101mph

I lost it on the start when I sat there for about 5 secs before I realised that the car had popped out of 1st gear after I had staged. So I looked a right tw@tt reving to 4.5k then dumping the clutch and the car reving its nuts off before I managed let off and find 1st gear

Did Santa Pod for the first time last year at the Jap Show, on my first go got shown up my a 200sx which had clearly been modded. Managed a 14.5 I think, bad start with hardly any revs.

Gave it plenty of revs on the next go and dumped the clutch and it made a big difference, managed a 13.6.

Alas, messed up on the 3rd go... but we don't need to talk about that one...

I guess its down to trial and error, and although gear changes make a difference, I think the biggest difference in time is down to how good a start you get.

Dont forget your scoob has 4 wheel drive so you should get a good start off the line, watch your mates Integra Type R's wheels spinning off the line as you get a good star. Went to Santa Pod a few times last year and raced a few FWD cars with around 300bhp when I had a standard MY00, youll be suprised how good your 4 wheel drive is especially on a damp track.

Got a 13.7sec with a standard MY00 with just a decat, dump valve and quickshift on a really cold day.

well all I've done is run proper Drag cars with slicks, apart from the odd race on street tyres with my first cars, however, as you may know its all won at the start with cars of similar p/w ratios.......where you may gain the edge is if your mates a bit right foot happy with his R he'll spin the tyres up as the Pods normally crap at RWYB's, what I suggest you try as one of the many launch tecniques is to literally drive off the line at say 2500-3500 and then nail it once you've got the clutch in, don't overrev, especially 1st gear, rather short shift, keep the power on, and if you can make it over the line without shifting the next gear without overrevving too much, do so, if you pull the last gear, you'll kill your ET/TS, and as has been said, drive on the rev counter at all times. Oh and they use a .500 tree at RWYB, go as the last orange comes on, you'll get away with it on a stock chassis....good luck!

That could have been me if you had the stickered up Impreza and had a quick chat with the 200SX driver before the off. Mine was the quickest 200SX of the day, did 13.5s @ 104MPH. It's not that modied, only has 290BHP and was on 205/55x16 cheap road tyres.

Les1 thanks for the tip on the holding lower revs that sounds a good idea because i praticed lauching the other day on a private road near me in the wet/damp and because i held the revs too high it just squirmed abit then griped and shot off , so holding at lower revs should make more sense . but it all depends what the track is like on the day ?.
my mates integra managed 14.2 i think last time but he really went for it on that run and never got near that on the others .
So i hope to beat that time or match it we will have to wait and see .
But ill go on the final orange cheers for that tip .

Guys do they give you ya 0-60 time on the print out as well? cos i would love to know what that would be ?.

Thats nothing, used them at the 'ring at much higher speeds. Cheap doesnt always mean crap.
