As Bubba said, check the insurance cost out first. A WRX model will be an import.
It would be worth paying to get it inspected as on a car of that age there's a number of things that could be wrong with it.
Don't rush into anything, there are a number of Imprezas about in that price bracket.

1) That mileage is VERY suspicious
2) Tatty bodywork is expensive to sort out, could also indicate rot in the chassis (imported cars aren't always weather/rust proofed for this country).
3) How long has it been in the UK?
4) How many onwers?
5) No service history is the biggest "no-no" when buying a performance car. Chances are it's an abused example which most likely will go bang v quickly!
6) How old are you, if under 30 you'll struggle to get insured. Not only are WRX imports, they're more powerful than UK spec too, which is already an expensive car to insure.
7) Are you prepared for the running costs? E.G. 20mpg on super unleaded and octane booster, service costs every six months, major services costing in excess of £450.
Think very carefully before buying a "cheap one" it could cost you dearly!
Regards.

Randjit,
£4000 savings - £3500 for the car = £500, which won't go anywhere near covering your first year's insurance I'm afraid. Consider also that 10000 miles at around 23mpg will give you a first year's fuel bill of around £2500, plus servicing, brakes, tyres and the inevitable repairs, I think you need a *lot* more cash. Cheap to buy doesn't mean cheap to run.
If it's only showing 30k on the clock then something is very much amiss - just how likely is it that a 12 year old car will have done only 2500 miles/year? Does the overall condition of the car suggest that figure is accurate? Or has it done a more realistic 130k miles and the seller is misleading you? (An engine rebuild runs about £2000).
WRX is the badge given to the 2.0 turbo models in Japan, so the car is an import and has about 240bhp, unless it's been modified - which most have.

I agree with many of the comments made regarding the Scoobies that you may be looking into. Even though I do not drive a red one and don't think I will ever buy a red car ever... but I am diverging... back to the point.
There are many 'cheap' cars out there but as mentioned previously, you can buy cheap and then have so many problems afterwards that maybe very costly.
I know some may agree that if anything does go wrong and more than likely is with a £4000 Scooby rather than a more reasonable one... Its chance...
I can offer you mine at £6500 ono and it's not red but has everything genuine about it. Let me know and I will forward some pics and details to your e-mail address if you like.
Otherwise, happy hunting...

thanks for youre help
i have had a look at the car and it really is rad i couldnt drive it cos the dude was out and he had left the keys with his mother so i could have a look. the inside is realy boss with three clocks on the dash what are they for ? he has painted bits of the dashbord silver and it makes it look really sporty.it starts great with no white smoke and no rattles. ive checked insurance and it aint bad as it will be owned by my uncl and on his insurance as he has ataxi firm so has loads of cars.ime going back later with the mechanic who looks after my uncls taxicars so he can have a good look over it befeore i deside to buy it or not.iv also been to see a costomized nova but that wasnt very good. ill let you know what the mechanic guy says later

Randjit,
I,d buy the Nova if I was you dude. These tend to have a much better power to weight ratio as well as having better brakes and suspension. Would also look more in place when your cruising around the streets of Wolverhampton, West Bromwich etc after darkness has fallen. Neons are also a lot easier to fit on the Nova sills as well due to the complex screw absorbtion qualities of the composite mouldings used.
All in all I sincerely think the Nova will be a much classier mount for a man as sophisticated as yourself.

Tatty body, no service history, modified (painted dash, boost gauge, who knows what else), highly suspect mileage... how many warning signs do you need?!
If you're winding us up, then dude, you're rumbled - now own up and tell us your usual screen name!
If you're NOT winding us up, then please, take the hint - it's a bad idea, just don't do it! Nobody wants to see you lose your money on an old shed that you can't afford to run. Hang on for another couple of years, get a better car - there are plenty around - and it'll be worth it.

A Nova 1.0 would absolutely wipe the floor with an Impreza never mind a 2.0 Nova. Jeez I shudder to think what a 2 litre would do.
You type like a spastic though mate. No offence.

sorry for the late responsce but ive only just been abl too log on to the puter.my mechanic had a look at the wrx and was well impreseed he said it had a dump valve. and a flamer kit and some very nice mudflaps. he did, unfortunately, say that currently driving an Impreza, a "true Rally legend", is likely to have me branded as a Chav. His reasoning is that most of the older models are now adorned with nasty aftermarket Alloy Wheels and extremely large Exhaust systems that do little else apart from annoying the neighbours.
I found this a little depressing, as I have always admired a true sporting icon, but I must bow to a more enlightened user of the Queens Highway.
I suppose that the only way I may be able to enjoy the status that comes with driving a "true great" is to save the necessary spondulicks to purchase a "Real" car, an Escort RS Cosworth Monte.
