try getting one thats got service history/records - its hpi clear - drives like it should - Best bet is to take some1 with knowledge of impreza's to go check it out with you if its your 1st time buying a scooby. Known engine problems/faults just do a search on here - also visit SIDC FAQ - good source of Info.
Cheers.
p.s. check your PM also...

Find a local independant specialist and arrange for them to inspect the car; for an hours or half an hours labour youll find out everything thats wrong with it. I get my local specialist to look at every Scooby I import, it costs £20 - £40; a fraction of the cost of a relatively useless AA/RAC inspection.
HPI it obviously and contact the previous owners. If the cars good theres no reason for the vendor to object to any of this.

Useless AA inspection? From my experience that's not justified. They were spot on with my inspection and it came with a warranty of up to £10,000 should they have missed something major! It was expensive, but when considered as a proportion of the cost of the car or replacing something major, the cost were very small indeed.
I understand they are no longer offering the service though.
Best.

Excellent advice from GC8, a speciallist will check one of these over for you and it wont cost you as much as being left with a big bill for things that go wrong.
If you give an area where you live, ie cheshire, people can point you to specallists in your area.
Id also check to see what fuel type the car is running, STi's are quite prone to det if not run on 100 ron fuel or equivelant (super/optimax and octane booster) a knocklink fitted to the car should show you that the owner has been looking out for this (and make sure it works!)
This car should also have had very recently a major service (cambelt, diff oils, basically the works) check to make sure it has, if not budget for it, also check your insurance co to see if they cover grey import cars, and check for modifications also as your insurance co may not like these on the car.

I had a potential buyer carry out an RAC inspection on my car - they listed major defects to the transmission. Turned out I have a uprated rear diff. They dont do not have the expertise regarding Type R`s which is basically a rally homologation shell - dont waste your money on them. however a HPI check is essential, and I would use a specialist company if I was in buying one.
