What kind of scooby have you bought? UK unmodified ones will run on supermarket unleaded; Jap import Stis are at risk of going bang without optimax plus octane booster.

Uk cars should be fine on unleaded fuel. JDM models unless re-mapped should be run on the likes of Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate. add a booster additive Millers or NF booster. As a bit of reassurance a knocklink monitor is well worth having. Have a STi myself so feed only the best. Optimax + booster.

My dealer told me when I got mine (UK MY00) that the info on the inside of the fuel cap refers to ordinary UK unleaded, which he said is "super" in Japan. At the last service I had the ECU reset and have been using Shell Optimax ever since.Has it made a difference?.......hhmmm.......I'm not sure,I think so but then I think I want to believe it has and my mind's playing tricks on me.

Read the back cover of the owners manual - "Gas station Reference"

Under "Fuel" for "Turbo Models"

Then make your own conclusion

I know this has been covered a million times before and for the specialists I'll apologise for the doofishness of this question but:

a) What, in fairly simple terms, is knocklink ?
b) Is it audible ?

Its a device that basically has a microphone on the engine, it picks up noise in varying degrees, the noisier the worse the outcome, it has 5 lights on, 2 green (good) 2 amber (warning) and 1 red (knock, danger), it tells you if your car is suffering from det that you cannot hear

The best advise i can give is run it on the best fuel possible, if thats optimax then run it on it, you will notice that the car will be smoother, it will get increased MPG but you may suffer a slightly heavier right foot which eliminates this in the process

I've always run my MY97 uk turbo on Optimax though it should run on normal unleaded.

Thanks. One day I'll understand more about the mechanical side of cars than "this is where the petrol, oil, fluids etc are inserted".

I do know the very important stuff like:

Which is the second best car in the world ? (after a DB9 which I can't afford)
