Have a couple of good mates here and one relative that have turned away from Evo 7 and 8 because of cold weather fragility.
I still eventually want an 8 myself though.

Bought a battery charger / conditioner from deemon tweeks a few weeks ago as my battery was starting to suffer from winter, lights , heater etc etc always on, so now I just pull into the garage and plug in , battery stays fully charged and it will also keep the battery in good condition .
well worth it

Batteries are batteries. There's no real way of determing a good one from a dud - especially aftermarket ones. There is no such thing as a "good" car battery - you do get what you pay for though (more expensive ones have longer gaurantee).
Bottom line is. If you have a duff cell, the other 5 cells will work harder and get overcharged to compensate, resulting in a battery that doesn't last long.
Eventually, if a cell dies completely, you have a worst case scienario of the alternator continually charging a fully charged battery, which effectively kills it off completely. So after a long run, you park up, then next time you start it "click" and it's as dead as the dodo!
Also, once they've gone flat once - they are damaged - in other words they loose their full capacity and will detiorate with every deep discharge. So if its been left to go flat - you've fooked it in the long run. This is why batteries on 2nd hand cars at dealers are always knackered or don't last long. As they spend weeks on end on a forecourt.
Not much use to you I know...but something to bear in mind about "why" batteries die on you!

of course it could be the trackstar thing draining the battery especially if you park up outside then later on put it in the garage. because it couldn't locate a satellite in the short time it took to move it from drive to garage it sends the signal out time and time again which costs 6 amps every time it does it for 6 hrs. if you mention it to your dealer they will get it sorted either new unit or software which only sends the signal for 1 hr then so it stops the battery going flat

My solution
Jon,
Had the same problems last winter with an 53 STI over slightly longer periods with the car in a warm garage and after the first 5months of ownership. Took it back to the garage and they tested the battery and alternator with nothing found to be faulty. Took to leaving it on a trickle charger when away at work with no more probs until the first time I forgot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Took it back to the garage again with the same results. Then had problems with the Trackstar phoning in for help all the time so they came out and changed the unit. While he was there he checked the amps being pulled with no problems found. Next time away left the charger of and a flat battery soon followed. Back to the garage and demanded a new battery which was fitted. Since then car was left for 4weeks without starting (work and hol`s) and it fired on the first turn and not even sluggish. I have had no more problems since, even with the latest weather(kiss of death).

Jon,
Mine also had clonking rear suspension. Turned out to be a broken shock. Replaced under warranty

Hi Mark
The battery problem was diagnosed as a tracker fault,by the fact that its constantly drawing current
and the main dealer has agreed to replace both rear shox foc at the next service

cool. thats what the warranty is there for.
my new rear shocks have been faultless since they were replaced
trackstar: never had a problem with mine. Maybe this is an 03 only issue ?
(started my car first time yesterday for 7 days)
