Advice...

With the money you save by buying an "unloved" bugeye there's plenty of cash left over to mod the pants off it !!

Midlife.....
PS

Mine developed an oil leak that the dealer had 3 goes at and still didn't cure. They started talking about taking the engine out to do the crank oil seal. As I had no faith and was tempted by the STi8 I traded it in.

I had a MY02 bugeye from new. I owned it for 18 months and clocked up 34000 miles in it.

The starter motor was replaced under warranty as it very occasionally stuck.

It did stuffer from clutch judder when cold which a lot do.The dealer should change it under warranty, as per the service update from IM.

74K on my MY01. Only ever had regular services. Just seems to get better. No problems with the engine at all. To be honest, on a modern car, 70K is not a huge amount of miles. We've all been conditioned into thinking that the average mileage for a car is 10K a year. If treated properly, there shouldn't be any problems. Check the service history and make sure the cambelt was changed at around 50K etc etc.

Also MY01 bugeye, only 45k miles, but most done at high revs.
No problems so far except for the fuel bills.

I've got a MY02 wagon that's just clocked up 60,000 miles in two years with various modifications including TEK3, exhaust, suspension and brakes.

With one exception it's been reliable and I'm reasonably sure the problem I had with the gearbox was as a result of a driving course I did earlier in the year causing it to implode.

Clutch has been changed 3 times on mine all under warranty, alarm changed due to shielding, again under warranty. Other than that no problems at 50,000 miles. It had a rattle from new, took me ages to spot it as I'd upgraded from an old shape, found and fixed under warranty.

I had a bug eye for 25 months from new - did 30000 miles no problems to report.

Apart from the two obvious ones.

Fuel consumption

and

shocking resale value. Trade are now at under 10K - you could had had mine for 10.5K

Just traded mine (box standard my02) against a new Evo VIII 260 - they allowed me 11,000 which I didnt think was too bad ?

As mentioned earlier clutch can judder when cold, many were replaced under warrenty, many were not. Worth knowing where the car came from many early bugs were parallel imports (like mine) nothing wrong with that.. as long as you know, check in the service book for supplying dealer/PDI stamp.

MY02 bug eye with 79,900 miles - replaced engine at 76,000 but that was due to piston rings. Was not right from 30k ish. Occasional sticky/notchy gear change in the hottest weather and driven hard. Other than that it's fine.

Mike

PS. I'm hoping to get over 200,000, reckon it's possible?

Had my MY01 from new only required a new battery recently, will need new front pads and discs soon but otherwise no problem. Usual clutch judder can be eased by running engine few minutes before driving off in cold weather particularly, dont know how and why but it works for me. Beware notchy gear changes any dealer taking an MY01 in worth their salt will check, hard driven cars suffer badlly...apparently!

Had my MY02 PPP wagon for nearly 3 years and 38k miles. The only problem to report was the juddering clutch when cold.

01WRX – Purchased in February this year at 50k miles; the previous owner had it from new and nothing had been done under warranty. Its now almost at 60k and I’ve not had a single problem.

MY02 STI Type UK Prodrive.
48,000 miles (this week)

Only problems have been clutch judder (fixed under warranty)
and ongoing noisy rattle from gearbox area (use search)

Oh, and the rear suspension knocking (fixed under warranty)

Apart from that, its a cracking car. No plans to get rid of her

02WRX - coming up to 40k. Modded since before 10k (tek, exhaust etc). No problems. Sure front brake discs/pads needed replacing at ~23,000 (ish), but aftermarket ones were better anyway! Same was true with tyres, only more like 10-12,000 miles on the fairly useless OEM ones.

I can get clutch judder in specific situations (pulling away after 2-3 minutes from a cold start), but nothing enough to worry about.

Don't forget, cars that have done >20k miles a year have probably done that in mainly long journeys. 80k of sitting on the motorway at 80mph will cause much less wear in many parts of the car than 5k spent thrashing it across country, or 5k of cold start "school runs" and similar journeys where it never even warms up properly.

Mine blew an ABS pump. Cant find anyone to reset the ECU.

Modded the hell out of the motor and no issues yet.

But i'm well prepared to replace the engine if I wreck it...
