Car has fssh etc and warranty etc but I am proceeding ,if at all, with caution.. advice please?!??!

scoobyp300 21 December 2004 01:15 PM

I have a bug eye on an 01 plate, high milage, i have had no problems at all.

pippyrips 21 December 2004 01:15 PM

what is the mileage? there are scoobies here with 100,000 and still seem to be running strong

Midlife...... 21 December 2004 01:18 PM

Advice... :D

With the money you save by buying an "unloved" bugeye there's plenty of cash left over to mod the pants off it !!

Midlife.....
PS
Scoobyp300, I've cleared out my PM !!

Mine developed an oil leak that the dealer had 3 goes at and still didn't cure. They started talking about taking the engine out to do the crank oil seal. As I had no faith and was tempted by the STi8 I traded it in.

Diccy.

pauld37 21 December 2004 01:19 PM

Had an my01 bug eye since July no problems, get it, you wont regret it :)

Scoobybits 21 December 2004 01:22 PM

chris's scooby 21 December 2004 01:32 PM

I had a MY02 bugeye from new. I owned it for 18 months and clocked up 34000 miles in it.

The starter motor was replaced under warranty as it very occasionally stuck.

It did stuffer from clutch judder when cold which a lot do.The dealer should change it under warranty, as per the service update from IM.

bluenosewrx 21 December 2004 01:45 PM

I have had a MY02 for 3 years now, only problem was with the Maf sensor. only done 30,000 miles though.

All the best , Mac.

antera309 21 December 2004 01:51 PM

I have a 01 Bugeye UK WRX with 105,000 miles on it. Have had it 6 months. No problems at all.

Chris L 21 December 2004 02:00 PM

74K on my MY01. Only ever had regular services. Just seems to get better. No problems with the engine at all. To be honest, on a modern car, 70K is not a huge amount of miles. We've all been conditioned into thinking that the average mileage for a car is 10K a year. If treated properly, there shouldn't be any problems. Check the service history and make sure the cambelt was changed at around 50K etc etc.

kend 21 December 2004 02:35 PM

Also MY01 bugeye, only 45k miles, but most done at high revs.
No problems so far except for the fuel bills.

Flatcapdriver 21 December 2004 03:09 PM

I've got a MY02 wagon that's just clocked up 60,000 miles in two years with various modifications including TEK3, exhaust, suspension and brakes.

With one exception it's been reliable and I'm reasonably sure the problem I had with the gearbox was as a result of a driving course I did earlier in the year causing it to implode.

JackClark 21 December 2004 03:19 PM

Clutch has been changed 3 times on mine all under warranty, alarm changed due to shielding, again under warranty. Other than that no problems at 50,000 miles. It had a rattle from new, took me ages to spot it as I'd upgraded from an old shape, found and fixed under warranty.

Trumble 21 December 2004 03:40 PM

I had a bug eye for 25 months from new - did 30000 miles no problems to report.

Apart from the two obvious ones.

Fuel consumption :D:D:D

and

shocking resale value. Trade are now at under 10K - you could had had mine for 10.5K

Just traded mine (box standard my02) against a new Evo VIII 260 - they allowed me 11,000 which I didnt think was too bad ?

BrynO 21 December 2004 04:54 PM

As mentioned earlier clutch can judder when cold, many were replaced under warrenty, many were not. Worth knowing where the car came from many early bugs were parallel imports (like mine) nothing wrong with that.. as long as you know, check in the service book for supplying dealer/PDI stamp.

Echo 21 December 2004 11:20 PM

MY02 bug eye with 79,900 miles - replaced engine at 76,000 but that was due to piston rings. Was not right from 30k ish. Occasional sticky/notchy gear change in the hottest weather and driven hard. Other than that it's fine.

Mike

PS. I'm hoping to get over 200,000, reckon it's possible?

scoobchrissy 22 December 2004 12:18 AM

Jase you know you want it one go for it :D
MY02 nearly standard :D with 52k still runs beutifull :)

Mr Sympathy 22 December 2004 01:18 AM

Had my MY01 from new only required a new battery recently, will need new front pads and discs soon but otherwise no problem. Usual clutch judder can be eased by running engine few minutes before driving off in cold weather particularly, dont know how and why but it works for me. Beware notchy gear changes any dealer taking an MY01 in worth their salt will check, hard driven cars suffer badlly...apparently!

MJW 22 December 2004 08:27 AM

Had my MY02 PPP wagon for nearly 3 years and 38k miles. The only problem to report was the juddering clutch when cold.

speedking 22 December 2004 09:10 AM

Radiator

Had to have a new radiator but other than that very reliable. 36000 miles.

wrx133 22 December 2004 02:36 PM

ive got a 01 wrx had the alarm changed twice, front and rear disc and pads new clutch and fly wheel and gear box due to problems changing from 3rd to 4th, all under warrenty, hoping to change it soon,

Wes

01WRX – Purchased in February this year at 50k miles; the previous owner had it from new and nothing had been done under warranty. Its now almost at 60k and I’ve not had a single problem.

T4molie 22 December 2004 05:32 PM

02 WRX Had it 2 years from new and no problems :) Mind you I've only done 17k miles it :D

marklemac 22 December 2004 06:59 PM

MY02 STI Type UK Prodrive.
48,000 miles (this week)

Only problems have been clutch judder (fixed under warranty)
and ongoing noisy rattle from gearbox area (use search)

Oh, and the rear suspension knocking (fixed under warranty)

Apart from that, its a cracking car. No plans to get rid of her :)

hades 22 December 2004 07:48 PM

02WRX - coming up to 40k. Modded since before 10k (tek, exhaust etc). No problems. Sure front brake discs/pads needed replacing at ~23,000 (ish), but aftermarket ones were better anyway! Same was true with tyres, only more like 10-12,000 miles on the fairly useless OEM ones.

I can get clutch judder in specific situations (pulling away after 2-3 minutes from a cold start), but nothing enough to worry about.

Don't forget, cars that have done >20k miles a year have probably done that in mainly long journeys. 80k of sitting on the motorway at 80mph will cause much less wear in many parts of the car than 5k spent thrashing it across country, or 5k of cold start "school runs" and similar journeys where it never even warms up properly.

nyscooby 22 December 2004 09:33 PM

Mine blew an ABS pump. Cant find anyone to reset the ECU.

Modded the hell out of the motor and no issues yet.

But i'm well prepared to replace the engine if I wreck it...

yamman 02 R1 22 December 2004 09:41 PM

mine is 02 sti and apart from a knocking from rear suspension and very occasional clutch judder its an awsome car(except for fuel but we all know about that)

phelpsa 22 December 2004 09:48 PM

03 bugeye (last ones), big-end went at 12,000 miles, new engine (under warranty).

Now at 18000 and nothing else.

Adam
