TopGear and performance car reviews
One thought crossed my mind this evening whilst watch the program.
It seems very false how the presenter who is used to driving extremely powerful cars can drop to the likes of a Golf Gti and feel the power. Its like myself stepping down from my Subaru into a 1 litre fiesta and driving it just as hard. You'd just loose the impression of power.

I don't think he so much "feels" the power as kind of 'intellectually' notes its performance relative to other cars in it's class.
Everything must seem a bit of a step down compared to the GT40! :-)
However, performance is a relative term!
Best.

As others have said, it's all relative. Not sure how you can say its false when it is relative. Not only is speed and power not everything, I'm sure the chassis on the Golf, and indeed the engine and somewhat better than our WRX chassis. Therefore, the impression of power is always there - good ro bad. IN the golf, it was very good, and coupled with everything else, made it excellent....

Me and the Mrs watched it last night and after Clarkson raved about the Golfs 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds she said, 'What's ours?' and I said just chortled.
Probably about the same until I get the 1,000 mile oil change done!
Stigs time Subaru Impreza STI - 1.30.1

6.9 to 60. Might be a bit optimistic! Aren't VW claiming low 7 -which sounds more like. For some reason I've never warmed to the golf Gti; I've only been exposed to the recent ones which simply don't aren't quick or exciting enough to be considered a proper Gti. I think i'd like the original though :-)

You can't slate the Golf GTI, I have an Original Campaign model which is now 21 years old and still worth £4-4500, in 21 years time I hope my RB5 still going to be worth that if it's still going and not rotted away, some how I don't think so!

Guys you have to also take into account that a Golf driver is (mostly) a different kind of person to a subaru driver. The GTi is not so much a hot-hatch as it is a potent small family car laced with a heritage of reliability and a lot of immage to look up to. As clarkson said, it's good for all the urban types to swap for their X5s for. And quite frankly it's a totaly different car to a WRX. Mind you, with a little bit of tuning, I'm sure 250-260 horses can be coaxed out of that VW engine before pistons, con-rods and clutch needed to be replaced, so match those with an LSD in the front, harder breakpads and a slightly uprated suspension and swaybar set-up, and you'll end up with a WRX beater... Albeit at the price of an STI by then!

The old 1.8T is capable of mid 300s without breaking, the 225 engines after all come with Mahle forged pistons. Time will tell on the 2.0 version.
6.9 doesn't seem unreasonable, the old 150 BHP Golf GTi used to do 8.0 IIRC, and this has 50 BHP more. The LCR 225 is sub 7 second.
Autocar had 0-60 in the high 6s with an Octavia vRS, although that was thought to have been breathed upon.

I wouldn't underestimate the new Golf GTI 200 BHP. My brother has the 1.8T and there wasn't a great deal in it to 60 MPH against my previously owned bug-eye WRX. The WRX was quicker but not substantially. (Distance terms)
I reckon this 200BHP would give the bug eye a run for its money!!
