More important than year, are things like service history. Has the car had any mods??
Also get a HPI check to see if the car has been a write off etc.

If the car is genuine and received plenty of TLC you shouldn't have any probs.

Hope things work out

listen to it from cold..not neccessarly cause for concern a lot run fine but are "slappy" from cold as other post says hpi checks and missuse more important to worry about..take your time ,do your homework and then enjoy!
look for standard ish cars and receipts for work done.

thing is the car is way down south.iv only spoke to the guy on the phone.
he seems really genuine,
he tells me the car is mint etc,the service book is full, only 2 owners.i do believe him.
i just wondered if there was anything about that year of model that was known to go wrong.
iv already had a my95uk scoob so i know a bit about them, just wasnt sure about the my97 as its got a different turbo etc.

that was more on the MY98 cars.

when you get athe MY97 make sure its a FACE LEFT model with Bucket seats the newer front too. Phaze One engine.
don't forget it was the MY97 taht got the 5.2sec 0-60 from TopGear

check when the clutch was changed... and see if the suspension has be done too.
my MY97 needed its forst new cluch at 76k miles.. also the damper had gone too... had them all done tho big £££'s

i had an my97 great car. faster than the my54 i have now. those seats are amazing much better than the new WRX!!!!!
only done 4500 miles in the new one so amy loosen up but the my97 really was a good motor, sometimes wish i had not spent the cash. really miss the noise form the turbo

the only problem i knew of was a cover near the turbo (crank case??) can leak a little because its near the turbo (heating up and down hardens the rubber seal, check down the left hand side of the engine and you may see fresh oil. mine had this but never noticed a significant drop in oil level (never had to top it up). didnt know it was happening untill roger clarkes pointed it out

better 40-100 too.

hi, owner of my97 uk turbo. some have leaking dumpvalves if standard ones still fitted, also they have the 2 port boost solenoid which gets clogged up.

SIDC website says its the my98 that suffers from piston slap not my97.

theres also the usual heat shield rattles but all of these are easily fixed, just check for clutch change and cambelt/crankseal.

Thumbs up

I have an MY97 and it most definately has piston slap, I know of two other 97's slapping as well. I'm told its just as common 97 and 98. Mines still going strong and it goes like stink cuz there's not much lag. Highly recommended but check for slap mine sound like a bag of spanners till it warms up!

i used to have a my97, bought it with 16k on it, part xd it with 24k on it against a p1, 11 months later the small end seized, needed a new bottom end, luckily covered under warranty for the new owner, other than that a good car, just needed decent brakes and suspension

You'll get a decent one for that.

I've just payed £5495 for a my96 with 43'000 on the clock
It's a WRX Import Sportwagon with all the goodies.

Had new clutch timing belt at the begining of the year and the Turbo
has been changed as it went a whobbler (£900).

All of the above was done before i had it by the way !!!!!!

Keep a look out for clutch 'judder'. i.e when pulling away from junction the car is juddering (not like 'kangarooing) less violent.
