Default MY93 WRX - How Fast?

I've had my WRX on a 93 plate for about a week now and very impressed with overall speed and handling etc, its a great buzz!

I've taken it to about 125mph but didn't notice the rev counter, think it was about 5500rpm (rev counter red lines at 7000) but not quite sure - does this sound about right and if so, I should be looking at around 150mph flat out red lining it?

Its got De-Cat exhaust up to front pipe and Bosch Coil Pack Mec 723.

150 is about right m8, give or take. Although I wouldnt recommend taken that fast until you get it remapped for uk fuel. Imprezas, for some reason, run a very lean mixture at high speeds. Got a m8 with a 95 wrx, he took it to 150mph for the first time, and bang! Too much detonation and bye bye piston number 3!

Quite right.

I've lost count of the no. of WRX and Sti engines we've rebuilt due to high speed antics.

If you are going to do speeds of this nature

a)get a knocklink
b)use Optimax or SUL and an octane booster all the time

otherwise it won't be long before you are buying a new engine.

How do I find out if its already been remapped for uk fuel though?

At the moment I'm using ultimate or super unleaded as no optimax round near me

I've got a MY94 STi and have to run it permenantly on Optimax with Octane booster, not cheap!
Is it possible to remap a MY94 STi for uk fuel or does it have to be a new engine managment system?

ScoobyECU or a custom re-map (Unichip) etc, would sort it for UK Fuel, have fun getting your hands on a scoobyecu though...

Nice I might drop scoobyclinic a line and sort something out then, I just want the engine to be a bit more reliable by running uk fuel and not having to worry as much about octane booster

Sorry to be picky, but I don't think there was a MY94 STI the STI version 1 was MY95 M reg, but could have been made August - December 1994

Sorry to sound dull but what is a knocklink or SUL?

I've been running mine on super unleaded as thats what the previous owner ever used as well, havent used octane booster or similar.

How much would it cost to remap it for uk fuel?

A knocklink is a warning device that will tell you whether detonation is occurring inside the engine. Det occurs when (amongst) other things the fuel is of an insufficiently high RON rating. Det is responsible for the destruction of a lot of Subaru engines. Well worth it on an import.

Available here www.jap-innovations.co.uk

SUL is Super Un Leaded

On an import I would personally always use a booster. You may be lucky and get away with just SUL but top speed runs on inferior quality fuel is a risky business and every time you do it you are walking a tightrope in terms of your engine's future. You may get away with it for a while but....

We build on average a couple of engines a week and 9/10 are imports and 9/10 have been doing 120mph+ on 97RON fuel or worse.

several "remap" options are available, ScoobyECU is one of the cheapest, but not sure on availability of it. YOu can totally replace the ECU with and Apexi, Link or GEMS etc. but it would probably work out cheaper just to use the booster and a knocklink unless you plan on keeping the car for several years.

Nope, dumb **** head me that was missing something! I knew version 2 was MY96 and therefore assumed version 1 was MY95, but you are all right version 1 seems to have started MY94 and gone into MY95 too. You learn summit every day, cheers all!
