Question Type R Model Years

Evening all,

Been having a peruse for a Type R and Im a bit confused......

What MY was the Type R released, I always assumed it was MY97 (STi3) but I saw one today which was supposed to be a 96P reg.

Also, when did the interior change from the older 92-97 style because again this seems different on the Type R compared to the same year STi.

Is there a good complete list of what changed year to year for the Type R models because Ive seen a load of very cheap 97s kicking about.

Rgds

'96 's are rare; but there are some. Expensive in Japan now as they dont need a model report.

Question

So, what's the model report all about ?
I've heard mentioned somewhere else, too.

Its to do with SVA testing, to import a car into the UK, it will need to pass a single vehicle approval test. The law has now changed and for it to pass that test, you need to have a model report to compare the car against. To get a model report done cost lots £££'s Hence thats why you wont be able to import any more STi Type R/22b's etc as no one will shell out to get the model report done on an old car (admittedly the best tho .

I know this cos I have managed to find a Type R that hasnt been owned by anyone in the UK but can go for its SVA (on Wednesday) because it was registered in the UK before the law changed, it just so happens they have only recently brought the car over from their compound in Japan.

If I've got any of it wrong... apologies

J

Type R's wernt released/unveiled until jan 1997, so a 96 P would be suspect, unless the date of manufacture predates august 96 in which case you could actually have a 96 P (if you dont register a JDM car within 2 weeks of arrival in the uk it goes back to its date of manufacture).
Hope this helps

Is that for brand new cars or just those which have previously been registered in Japan?

If a Type R was built in jan 1997 it would be a P reg

P reg went from 01 August 1996 - 31 July 1997

Just checked up on this, the release date for the type R in Japan was Jan 22nd 1997, i would say though, that they would have manufactured the first ones a few months previously.

Yep any car upto 31 July 1997 would be a P reg so thats a least 6 months of pre r reg production

That confuses me; seeing as I have bid on two Type R's declared as 1996's within the last six months.....

Perhaps they were pre-prods?

The cars would have been manufactured in 96 no doubt, one of my points stated that a car that hasnt been re-registered (or registered) will be plated from its date of manufacture, this could have happened to your car.
22nd Jan 97 was when these cars went on sale in Japan.

Bid on in Japan Tony; so I can only conclude that they registered before the offical model release.

They both sold for 1.2 million yen too so I assume that they have ended up here; thats way over the normal selling price for an STI4 Coupe, even 1997's only reach about 1,000,000 Yen.....
