Default Track car

Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying a car for use exclusively on the track. Could I buy a cheap import and get away with not SVA'ing it/MOT'ing it?

Remember the car will not be used on the roads.

Thoughts - dodgy or wot?

Nothing wrong with it.

Lots of people run track cars that are not road legal.

You will need to trailer it to and from events but thats all.

I have done this myself for some years.

Thanks billythekid.

I was thinking of an old WRX.

Any idea of how cheap I could pick one up for and where?

Hi

Not sure to be honnest. However, I would give this advice. If you are going to use this car for track use only then get a track car. Something like an ex-rally car. A full cage is a must, along with brake upgrade etc.

IMHO any Subaru is not really going to be a cheap track car. I would look for something like a 306 on make race car or similar.

I will have a dig around for you, what is your budget?

I have been running a Caterhams for the last 5 years, they are quite cheap and you can do 2 or 3 track days on a set of tyres (£200 for a full set), brake pads will last around maybe as much as 10 track days. Clutch is going to last 30 or 40 events.

You can pick up an ex racer for about 10k.

Just get yourself down to the dock auctions and buy a WRX straight off the boat. No need for SVA or MOT or Tax or Insurance. That's what I did - just bolted in a cage and upgraded the brakes to Group N spec. My car came with huge Jap exhaust, fully adjustable Tein suspension, HKS induction kit, front and rear strut braces as well as uprated engine and gearbox mountings.

Very happy bunny indeed - Only time it has let me down was when the header tank split which was only a 5 minute job to sort once I had got a new one.

Dock auctions are full of sheds; all of the crap from Jap auctions ends up there; and even worse, stuff that wasnt ever auctioned. Try to think about every concern you have about imported cars: altered odometer reading; undeclared crash damage; flood history etc etc; youll find it all there.

Im expecting a few posts telling me that I dont know what Im talking about now, from people whove purchased from dock auctions now and didnt know any better.

Dock auctions have destroyed the import market and are responsible for people associating 'imported' with '****e'. Dock auctions are ****e!;why dont the cars have their original auctions sheets still? Where are the oil change stickers from in the door shuts/dash side? (Ive added some clues: appraisal with ALL faults listed; auction grade; mileage declared; damage declared...)

Simon (I hate dock auctions)
