Bugeye - How Quick II

Bugeye - How Quick II
Following a recent thread concerning the performance of bugeyed impreza's I though id do a little speed test of my own, to give perspective buyers a taste.
My main hobby is skydiving (hence the reason scoobs are a side interest to me) , and when the plane isnt up, there is a nice open, flat runway. So I took a little vid clip of what my MY02 WRX UK is capable of.
Very light mods are PE exhaust system (catted) and K&N panel filter. Morette headlights too but these dont alter the performance. Uppipe cat is still in place.
This is a very unscientific test so please dont rip it to bits cuz I didnt do this, or should have done that - take it as is, a bit of fun.
Comments are welcome, and please dont try to emulate this unless you can do it in a safe place (NOT ON THE PUBLIC HIGHWAY).

Nice one mate. It would appear from the video that the times are about 0-60 in 5 secs, and 0-100 in 13secs going off the speedo. If you add the average 10% speedo error! then this would take it to about 0-60 in 6.3 and 0-100 in about 15 which probably isn't far off being right.

maths
add the average 10% speedo error
5 + 10% = 5.5, or 0-66 on the video is less than 6 seconds, about 5.7

How does 5 sec + 10% = 6.3 sec
5 + 10% = 5.5, or 0-66 on the video is less than 6 seconds, about 5.7
5 + 10% = 5.5, or 0-66 on the video is less than 6 seconds, about 5.7
So by extrapolating the added time needed to get to the real speed, gives the times I quoted. It's not rocket science you know!!

So you take the 60mph speedo time of 5 seconds (really 54mph) and multiply by 6/54 and add that on ... which gives 5.6s Still can't see where 6.3 comes from? Hope you are not a rocket scientist

You really are a bit thick aren't you? Do you really believe that acceleration is a constant? The time taken to get from 54mph to 60 mph is longer than say to get from 34 to 40 due to other factors wind resistance, rolling resistance, etc. Therfore if at 60mph speedo reading he was really only doing 54mph, then to get to a real figure of 60 mph will take approx 1.3 seconds longer, and at 94mph to 100mph real figure would take even longer due to the factors mentioned before.

Mate, isn't that an WRX STi?I didn't think the WRX rev-counter went up to 9k. Probably mistaken though, as I've not been in one for a while.
Best.

On the GPS, my speedo seems to have a 5mph zero error
54 at indicated 60 is not only possible, its likely.

No matter how quick or slow the car may be statistically - the way the needles go round the dials on the video would be more than quick enough for 99% of UK drivers!!
Thanks for the vid newagewrx.

...............................Ahhhh but!
When you factor in the gravitational pull of the Moon, Mc Donalds, and Uranus it actually means a true speed of 10020062mph!!! In real terms To coin a Blair phrase, that is!!! (I always wondered how he got to the 45 min claim- he used the same formula!!!)
Seriously though, great vid and as above impressive however you look at it!
PS the WRX does show 9k rpm

It was more like 13.5secs to 100mph. I have just watched a Modded Rs turbo do it in 11.79 secs. But i think the scoob in the vid does very well. I will see what i get tomorrow. For the mods the scoob has i have to admit its impressive. Nice one Newagewrx it looks like u have a good one.

Thanks for the replies guys, I recall seeing somewhere that the newage cars are fairly accurate on the dial - although there will deffinatly be some exageration of speed (I thinks its the law, a speedo has to show over rather than under ?).
Ill try to find the artical out, if i remember correctly its about 4 mph out at 100 and less than that at lower speeds. Ill edit the first post to include a link to it if i come across it.
Ive always belived I had goten a 'good un' and as I said in the first bugeye thread, managed to outpace a very lightly modded 99 scoob and a standard Focus RS. My friends have always commented on how fast mine seems for such a low level of mods. Not to rub salt into wounds, but up to now Ive never had any problems with it at all, alot of folks talk about thier cars being good 1 day and not so good another - I dont get that at all, nither do I get clutch judder or any of the other faults mentioned.
Glad U enjoyed it, just a bit of fun really.

Great vid Andy-its good to show all those people that what us bug owners say isnt a load of bull
I was going to keep the car tucked away in the garage tonight-but after seeing the vid,i think i might just have to go for a play now
BTW WRX's as said earlier,do show 9k and redline at 7k-STi's redline at 8k IIRC

yep wrxs do redline at 7 and show 9 same as blobeyes, but the STIs redline at 7500 i think, not as high as 8 (UK ones that is....)

Remembered the right equation but wrong application as you don't know the distance travelled and it only applies to constant acceleration which the car doesn't have. For the pendantic ones the whole equation is wrong as it is based on Newtion physics and doesn't take into account relativity.
The car is diffently a quick and the needles move a lot quicker especially the 60 to 100mph than my MY01. My guess is true speed is around 95mph at the end. 3rd doesn't quite stretch to a true 100.

I have an origin Blue and at a cruising of 90 the GPS system says 89 so i would say give or take my eye site my car is pretty much bang on with the 12 sats i am locked onto.

Dominic,
I've always wondered how an origin would read compared to the speedo - my classic road angel shows my bugeye speedo to be a constant 10% out all through the range - exceedingly safe for cameras (assuming you're sticking to the "limit" but a PITA for driving "lessons"
Any chance we could try a "calibration check" one night from the FB meet to see whether your origin comes up with the same as my RA?

IIRC, speedo's legally have to read in the range of road speed +10/-0% (i.e. blob on or read faster than you're going). There will be minor variations with tyre wear etc, and you can get good and bad ones of them too - not all WRXs will be exactly the same. Typically, they're often something like 5mph optimistic, fairly constant through the range.
Rev limit in a 02 WRX is 7400 - or at least it is on mine with decat up-pipe, sports cat exhaust, ECUTEK etc. In mine, that corresponds to almost bang on an indicated 100mph in third gear - which seems close to that in the video.
Difficult to say precisely, but I would say off-hand compared to my more modded bugeye - which has twice got mid-low 280s bhp on PEs rollers - there isn't a great deal in it. I think I have a bit more, re-watching the video, I'm sure I'm noticeably quicker once over 80, but not by much until then - so you definitely aren't doing bad!

Just wait untill you get 5000+ miles on the car and it will feel like a different machine altogether.
I ran mine in from new very carfully, not going over 4000 rpm or 50% throttle at all. On the way home after the 1000 mile service I thought ok time to open it up alittle and have a short burst, man was I dissapointed - seemed not much faster than at the 50% self imposed limit I had stuck too during running in.
The engine was sooooooo tight and strangled, it just didnt want to rev at all. By 2.5k miles It had started to seem alot better and by 5000 it was a totally different car.
I honestly belive that most of the bugs bad name was caused by the motoring press going and borrowing one from a dealer, most likeley with less than 1000 miles on the clock, and expecting it to be monster fast - they just arnt.
Once run in (mines now got 16000+ miles) they are so, so much better and you should have alot more to come from yours if you only have 1600 miles.
