Default what's the highest safe maintainable speed for a scooby?

mechanically wise?

not encouraging speeding before 'certain people' start bleating.

just want to know if i decide to do a track day or whatever. the comments about scoobs not liking a WOT top speed run on a recent thread got me wondering.

I would say you can go as fast as you like, or as fast as you can drive.
I can't see why a scoob couldnt do a WOT run for a whole tankfull.

Most engines go bang when hot, never seen a cold one do it

I'm not sure there's a specific upper limit - it probably varies a fair bit between cars anyway. As I understand it, scooby engines don't go bang at high speed, they go bang when you slow down again, leaving a red hot engine without the 150mph wind blasting over it to keep it cool. It's at that point, when it's still hot but without a cooling breeze, that it grenades itself in a shower of bearing parts.

Do a warm up and cool down lap and you should be OK.

You would never get an Impreza to do it's top speed at any UK track.

Good advice indeed, leave the car running for a bit in the pits and don't put the handbrake on untill things have cooled down.

you can quite easily max out a type RA on a few of the UKs circuits. Mine's on the limiter in 4th through the Craner Curves @ Donington, and regularly see 7800 in 5th on the back straight.

I really wouldn't want to run at WOT for more than a few minutes though as it's really feckin scary with the bonnet distorting!

Too scared to look but have various GPS logs between 140 and 145 in a STi5 RA.

The earlier RAs have slightly shorter gearing.

How fast is it going at 7800rpm in 5th?
The 5 and 6 ra with the lower ratio 5th is 19.7mph/1000rpm in 5th :

7.8 X 19.7 = 153mph

Thats going some at Donington park
