Default WRX STi's

What do you honestly think of them? Good points? Bad points?

My Brother has finally sorted his life out and has bought himself a 97 'R' Scooby WRX STi.

Basically he said the performance of them is awesome but what are the book figures for them? This car is supposedly running 295bhp with just a filter and exhaust. Does this sound right as i don't know whether to take it with a pinch of salt?

Ahh right. If they are 280 standard i wouldn't have thought 15bhp would be hard to get. Also do they have one or two cats?

I think, as it is on an 'r' plate, it should be an sti 4. This has one main cat in the down pipe. Although the book figures say 280bhp, it was more like 300bhp. This is the case from the sti 3 and up, as they didnt quite stick to the gentlemans agreement of 280.

I have the same car and on the rolling road it recorded 293 bhp in standard form.

Oh rite! Well my brother said it was silly fast, getting to 100 in no time!
So with a Blitz exhaust like it has its probs running 300bhp. Madness! Oh and i think it is a STi 4. I was told if it has a digi odometer it is?
What are the performance stats for these then?

Have a look at:

www.evo.co.uk

P1 stats are on there, and it'll be a bit faster than that.

P1 is down as 4.9 to 60, and 219 bhp/ton.

Off the top of my head:
0-60 = 4.6s
top speed = 150 +
The sti 4 is geared to do 180 but I think about 165 is about right.
Ive not come across anything for similar money that can keep up with the sti upto 120-130 ish. Bl$£dy good fun! Make him buy one, then you can borrow it!
How much is the car up for?

Mine isn't a type R just straight STI version 3, on a P plate. With both cats, got 273 bhp & 246 lb/ft torque. I was surprised as most people believe they are nearer 300bhp but Power Engineering said that it may have been that level new and on 100RON fuel, but it is quite normal for a 7 year old car run on UK fuel to actually be a bit down on the published figures. Replaced the rear cat only, with a Magnex pipe and an hour after the first run, got 288 & 264, so 15 bhp & 18 lb/ft increase. There was a type R there, he got a disappointing 281 bhp, it was 314 bhp after a full de-cat and Power Engineering phase 1, but that was 2 years ago.

The top speed is not 180mph, from what I understand, when they got to the STI 3 and the stronger engine, they increased the max revs to 8,250 from 7,500 and to keep the top speed around 150mph they put a close ratio gearbox in. That is why you get the superb acceleration, 4.6 0-60 as stated above.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the bhp figures, it's all in the gearing, turbo etc. I had a play with a P1 that had shown 320bhp on the rollers, I was convinced he'd thrash me and stayed on the inside lane, so he could flash past. He couldn't gain on me at all, 20-80mph.

I didnt say that their top speed is 180mph, all I said that is that the gearing ratio ( 22mph per 1000rpm ) will allow for that speed.
Obviously, the sti in standard form will not reach anywhere near this, more like 160. The type r has a lower final drive ratio of 19mph per 1000rpm which equates to around 156mph. This, means faster acceleration through the gears.

i have an sti5, 4dr

its only engine mods so far are full decat, sti panel filter and uprated fuel pump. i dont know the power output at the moment, but i have a PE print out from the previous owner and it was 311 bhp with a full decat & K&N induction.

it is booked in to have a custom remap next month, so i'll get it on the rollers soon after.

as for 0-60, i got 4.47 in the above form with the timing gear at ford fair in august. Top end, ive had 158 shown on road angel with about 1000 rpm to go (on my private road of course).

I went from a fully decatted UK turbo to a std STi5 and the performance increase was massive.
