Default whats classed as high mileage

I've been looking for an impreza for some time now. I've seen a lovely looking 99 on a t plate in silver, the only thing that bothers me is the mileage. I've never bought a car that has had over 40,000 on the clock. This scooby has 76,000 on the clock. Ive e-mailed the owner several times, he tells me it has some service history. It just scares me buying a car with higher mileage than what im use to. I dont even know how reliable these cars are. Can anyone put my mind at rest and assure me that if i bought this scooby that its not going to go bang on me after 10,000 mile. I know buying privatly is a gamble but would anyone else out there buy a performance car like this with this sort of mileage on?????? When should the cam belt be done on these cars?????????

HELP ME, I NEED SOME ADVICE B4 I SPEND MY HARD EARNED PENNY'S.

If not a full history is there proof oil changes have been done ?
If it's a MY99 thats an oil change every 6 months or 7500 miles.
Should have had about 11 by now

High mileage = more than 12000mls per year from first use.

My Impreza is 1 year old with 18,000 + miles, alongside my Primera @ 10 years old and 195,000 miles.

No worries if it is looked after,

Test drive it and at speed in 5th, see if the gear stick seems to have a lot of movement when you go on / off the power. If it does, leave well alone. My MY99 started jumping out of 5th at about that mileage, and the gearbox failed shortly after. Thankfully it was a company car, so it was all sorted (not under warrantly) but the bill including MOT was £4K! ("Sign here, Mr Smudge", "Thank you", "Here are your keys")

Glad I wasn't paying for that myself!

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. When I was looking for my MY99 18 months ago I was initially looking at ones with similar(ish) mileage to the one you mention but ended up finding one that cost an extra £1k to buy, but only had 24k on the clock... and one owner from new and everything else that I wanted... i.e. air-con, tracker, upgraded ice, colour matched, new tyres... etc. So it may be worth just to keep looking and putting in an offer on one with lower mileage. There are some good ones out there (mines still only got 31k on the clock). Whatever you end up buying I would make sure it had FSH by either an independent specialist or main dealer.

Sure was - only place I could get it done. No wonder the leasing companies charge so much for a servicing contract.

Allegedly.

I bought mine (UK MY97) with 56k on the clock. It's now done 96k in 2.5 years, and (touch wood) it hasn't missed a beat. Just had regular services, and wear and tear items such as brakes etc looked at. I wouldn't get one without full service history though.

My MY98 (with FDSH) popped at 82,500 miles. There are plenty out there - just shop around but as others say - make sure it has FDSH. Not worth the risk as repair bills are very expensive.

I thought average mileage had gone up over the last few years, I think most traders take average to be about 14k a year now.

Modern "run abouts" now seem to have silly service intervals. My other half just got a C2 and I think its service interval is 20k miles or 12 months...???

PS - I have had a Ford Escort RS2000 with 90k when I got it, 2 years later it had 133k on it when I traded it in, never had any problems - but had regular oil changes.

Same with my old company car - Mondeo TD, did almost 90k in that and never had any problems.

I think modern car engines are designed to last 2 or 3 times longer than engines from say, 20 years ago.

It all depends on the price, condition and service history in my opinion. High mileage alone shouldn't put you off - it's the complete package you need to weigh up. If you're having doubts then maybe walk away and spend a little extra when you find the right car - you'll know which it is when you see it.

I bought a MY99 at 3 years old with 62k on the clock. Had it a shade over 2 years and it's just had the 90k service done at 80k miles (based on time intervals). Running sweet as a nut and doesn't feel like it's got the miles that it has.

I got mine at the right price, with full dealer history and I knew where the car had been - ex contract supplied by a friend.

Hi,

I'd want a full service history if I were going to buy any performance car. I managed to bag a MY99 with only 15K on the clock a month or so ago, but still wanted to know that the car had been well looked after and that the oil changes had been done (despite the very low milage). I also got an AA Inspection and took the car to a specialist soon after purchase.

I may have been a bit paranoid, but I don't think you can be too careful when it comes to car buying. If you're buying to a budget, you have to ask yourself: Can I afford to fix any problems that might occur if I don't do my homework.

Best.

FDSH is all good advice etc, but one you might want to also remember is that the MAF sensor are prone to failing on these cars (99-00MY) so even if its done 15K or 80K the engine could still go pop.
Mines just been replaced after 4 years and 53K so would recommend you change that if the car is 3 years old + just as a matter of precaution.
